Lot 5

A Monumental Italian Cabinet with StandIn ebony and ebonized wood, featuring an architectural-inspired structure, pietra dura inlays, and gilt bronze mounts. The front of the cabinet presents a symmetrical arrangement with a central niche, flanked by two rows of six drawers richly adorned with pietra dura panels, including various semi-precious stones and different types of marble, such as lapis lazuli, agate, jasper, brocatello rosso, rosso antico, alabaster, cipollino, and porphyry, arranged in geometric patterns. The central niche, also lined with pietra dura panels depicting shell-shaped cartouches, is decorated with architectural elements, including lapis lazuli columns and a portico with a triangular pediment supported by two gilt bronze Atlas figures. The ceiling of the niche is painted in trompe l'oeil, and the base is adorned with parquetry work. The sides of the cabinet, with pietra dura panels, replicate the composition of the central panel, framed by the portico. The top, with a row of five drawers decorated with red porphyry panels, is surmounted by four putti playing musical instruments. The base, with four drawers and a small central drawer, features a carved apron decorated with carved volutes. The original construction of this cabinet dates back to the 17th century, showing evidence of alterations, possibly during the 19th century, with the addition of decorative elements and structural modifications. The stand, of later construction, with four drawers and volute-shaped front legs, maintains decorative consistency with the cabinet, featuring the same type of panels with pietra dura inlays. A small drawer at the base of the cabinet has an interior label reading 'Ant.(?) Burg(...)rgasse.Graz,' with a handwritten note in French stating: "Furniture from the imp(?) Palace of Burg(?)... brought here by Archduchess Maria of Bavaria 1571-1616, with all her luxury objects from Munich." Although uncertain, this reference seems to suggest a connection between the cabinet and Maria Anna of Bavaria (1574-1616), daughter of William V, Duke of Bavaria, and wife of Ferdinand II (1578-1637). The piece also bears two other inscriptions: one in black ink at the bottom of the left drawer of the cabinet base — "Stockholm(...) 18/8 - 1947/ H HALKJAER./ Dansk" and "HÖRN 1955-1965/ CORMÉRY"; and another handwritten in pencil in Swedish, at the bottom of the left drawer of the stand — "The cabinet was bought in the 1940s from Consul General Jean Jahnsson, formerly at the Van Der Nootska Palace, when we moved to Östermalmsgatan 21 Stockholm/ A big move when Stensund and Van der Nootska were left./ Eugène CORMERY/ Strangnäs July 1996." (minor losses and defects)193x204.5x62 cmNote: The pietra dura technique has its origins in the Florentine Renaissance, reaching its peak at the end of the 16th century. This technique is characterized by the meticulous use of semi-precious stones, such as lapis lazuli, jasper, agate, and porphyry, carefully cut and arranged to create intricate decorative patterns. The development of pietra dura as an art form was strongly promoted by the Medici family in Florence, culminating in the foundation of the Galleria dei Lavori in 1588, which became a center of excellence for the refinement and dissemination of this technique. In the context of the cabinet now presented for auction, the presence of pietra dura panels is a testament to the mastery of this technique, highly valued by the European aristocracy of the 17th and 18th centuries. This cabinet shares similarities with a distinct group of pieces produced in Rome in the 17th century. Notably, a particularly significant cabinet was sold by Sotheby's in London on 6 July 2011 for £668,450. Other comparable cabinets are part of renowned collections, such as that of the Duke of Hamilton, the Demidoff Cabinet (sold by Sotheby's in 1992), and an impressive example in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The central niche of the cabinet, with lapis lazuli columns and shell-shaped cartouches—likely an addition or later alteration—as well as elements like the central arched panel, its pediment, and the design and decoration of the side drawers, remain faithful to the style of the aforementioned cabinets, making it a monumental example of the extraordinary decorative craftsmanship developed in pietra dura furniture. Registration No: PN07 KTU Chassis No: WP0ZZZ98Z7U753659 MOT: January 2025Finished in the classic combination of Arctic Silver with Black leather upholsteryDesirable five-speed manual gearbox, Porsche side script, Black roof and Black alloysQuoted 242bhp / 201lbft and reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds and 162mphDetailed service history with expenditure since 2018 totalling over £17,000 (including an engine refresh)Great value, mid-engined Porsche fastbackLess powerful but more reliable than the ‘S’ variant, the entry level Cayman arrived in July 2006. Faster than many previous generation 911s, Porsche’s hardtop, mid-engined, two-seater was also more dynamically balanced and driver friendly. Possessing greater torsional rigidity than the Boxster Convertible with which it shared a platform, the Fixed Head Coupe was able to utilise stiffer suspension and thus enjoyed even better handling / roadholding. Powered by a DOHC 2.7 litre ‘Flat Six’ engine allied to either manual or Tiptronic transmission, the Cayman had some 242bhp / 201lbft and was reportedly capable of 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds and 162mph. Styling cues borrowed from Porsche’s back catalogue (356, 550 Coupe and 904 Coupe) helped with the aesthetics, while the ergonomically designed cabin was suitably driver orientated. A serial Porsche 911 and Cayman owner, the vendor was drawn to ‘PN07 KTU’ because of the fastidious way it had been looked after by its previous custodian. A Metropolitan Police Royalty and Specialist Protection officer, the latter spent over £17,000 on the car between 2018 and 2023. Marque specialist 911Box carried out most of the work including: a thorough £7,931.88 engine overhaul (new IMS and crankshaft bearings, clutch and timing chains etc) at 79,833 miles, fitting a Dansk sports exhaust (£2,387.87) at 85,819 miles and the most recent major service (£876) last October at 103,405 miles. Other expenditure encompassed new rear brake discs, replacement front springs and air-con re-gassing. Ordered via A I Motokinisi of Cyprus to take advantage of the Mediterranean island’s lower taxes, chassis 753659 was built to right-hand drive specification complete with heated, hard-backed sports seats, 18-inch Cayman S alloy wheels and Black leather upholstery. Attractively finished in Arctic Silver with a contrasting Black roof, rear spoiler and side scripts, the two-seater is warranted to have covered some 110,000 miles from new. Housed within the accompanying leather-bound history folder, the service book contains ten stamps as well as numerous invoices, old MOTs and a Porsche Certificate of Production. The 996 is the internal designation for the Porsche 911 model manufactured and sold between 1998 and 2005. On its debut, the 996 featured the most significant changes to the Carrera model since its 1963 introduction, namely the water-cooled engine replacing the previously air-cooled unit. Progressively stringent noise regulations, environmental concerns, a higher expectation for refinement and a high-performance, four-valve per cylinder engine made the switch necessary. Other changes included a sleeker body with a more steeply raked windshield and a redesigned interior. The performance characteristics remained superb with reliability at its core. The 996 was another step forward for Porsche, making cars that not only excited their fan base but appealed to those who wanted a comfortable and practical everyday sports car that could sprint to 60mph in a shade over five seconds.Originally presented in Ocean Blue over the Natural Dark Grey interior, however, this car was an exhibit at the recent 2024 Art Trail Event and was painted by a well-known Artist, printmaker and sculptor, named Penfold (aka Tim Gresham) who has collaborated with brands including Disney, Nike and other famous brands (this can be seen featured on Instagram Type-7). The car was painted following the blue Porsche being taken back to prima leaving a blank canvass for the artist. It was sprayed with cans externally over 3 days and was finished with a full lacquer paint back in the paintshop oven. Penfolds work is based on the fashionable Miami Wynwood District use of 1970’s colours which make this Porsche 996 manual gearbox, a one-off car. It is perfect for those who have an interest in art, use of pastel colours and uniqueness. Featuring the six-cylinder 3.4L engine which produces 296bhp and can achieve a 4.8 second 0-60 time, which are still impressive numbers to this day. It has the sought-after six-speed manual gearbox and has the benefit of permanent four-wheel drive. This example is a very good handling car and has plenty of traction thanks to its four-wheel drive system. It sits on its gloss black 17’’ Carrera 4 wheels which have recently been refurbished and all four tyres are new. Other fitted extras include air-conditioning, sunroof and factory fitted rear parking sensor. This 911 has been treated to a Dansk exhaust system which sounds lovely and there's a switch on the centre dash which can be used to switch between normal and the loud setting. Included is a large folder of invoices for servicing and many replacement parts, MoTs, original bill of sale and a spare key. The bulk of servicing was carried out by the suppling dealer Porsche, Glenvarigill Company Ltd from 1999 to 2009. Since 2009, the car has recorded just 8,000 miles and was last serviced by CRM Motors in Lanark in 2019 at 48,290 miles and we are also informed that there are no known IMS bearing issues. A striking example which will certainly turn heads and great to have something so unique and with no reserve which makes it all the more desirable. Consigned by James Good THIS WAS EXHIBITED AT THE RECENT 2024 ART TRAIL EVENT IN ESSEX AS IT WAS PAINTED BY WELL KNOWN ARTIST NAMED PENFOLD ( TIM GRESHAM)THE ARTIST HAS COLLABORATED WITH THE LIKES OF DISNEY, NIKE AND OTHER FAMOUS BRANDS.CAR HAS A DANSK EXAUST SYSTEM WHICH SOUNDS GREAT AND HAS A LARGE FOLD OF HISTORY
