From the private estate of a relative of Charles Noke and made by Charles Noke, this plaque is depicting an alchemist, marked with the Royal Doulton backstamp to the reverse. The rectangular ceramic plaque shows a bearded man in long robes, holding a teapot in one hand and a cup in the other, with a long stream of liquid extending from the teapot to the cup. The figure is dressed in a green hat and striped tunic, with a dark vest and a multicolored sash. The plaque is mounted in a gold-toned frame with linen matting and a gold-tone interior border. Marked with the Royal Doulton England lion and crown backstamp. Frame size: 12.75"L x 1.5"W x 18"H. A DOUCAI PORCELAIN 'CHICKEN' CUP Qing Dynasty, Kangxi mark, delicately potted with slightly flaring sides, decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels with a scene of three chickens, one crouching with its tail feathers raised, and flowers and foliage issuing from rocks, unglazed foot rim, the recessed base with six character Kangxi mark in underglaze blue 7cm diameter Family collection, Maple Avenue, Singapore, acquired 1970s or early 1980s, thence by descent. (The majority of the collection sold Hotlotz, 3 Jul 2022) Additional Information: Although a Ming Dynasty prototype, examples from the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong periods are known, the majority bearing apocryphal Chenghua marks. A Kangxi mark and period example can be found in the Percival David Collection, British Museum, however the design of the scene mirroring the earlier Chenghua models. The present example varies in its design from the earlier prototype, without chicks ,only featuring one group of rocks and the positions of the chickens. A pair of bowls with this matching design variation, from the Christina Loke Balsara Collection, catalogued as Kangxi mark and period, can be found in Arts of Asia, Jan-Feb 1980, Laszlo Legeza, 'Ming and Ch'ing Imperial Tou-ts'ai and Wu-ts'ai Porcelains', Fig.7 & 8 Condition Information: A fine hairline to the rim running through the tail feathers of the orange bird, a few small fleabites to the foot rim This is an auction of preowned and antique items.
