Lot 40

A Romanesque madder stained walrus ivory Tableman or gaming piece, Cologne, c.1140-1180 AD the centre carved in high relief with a seated crossbowman firing upward, his squire behind him holding a shield over his head and a quiver of bolts or a flagon, the crossbowman wearing a mail hauberk and coif with his own shield placed in front of him showing the enarm or loop where his arm would be placed when wearing the shield; piercing his shield is a lance, within a border of repeating quatrefoils and rectangular fillets, remnants of madder stain, 56mm diameter, 12mm deepLiterature – The Victoria & Albert Museum includes a number of similar gaming pieces in its collection and their catalogue entry states -Round gaming pieces such as this one almost certainly belonged to sets of 'tablemen'. The game of tables, or backgammon was popular in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, draughts only becoming established in the later Middle Ages. There were fifteen counters to each side, and twelfth-century boards inlaid with bone settings have been excavated at Gloucester and Saint- Denis. Only one full set with two sides of fifteen counters and a board, that at Gloucester, still exists, but it is clear that a great variety of subjects was carved on the discs, ranging from single animals to scenes from classical mythology.Although some 250 examples of Romanesque gaming pieces decorated with figures are known to exist, most are held in museum collections and are scarcely seen for sale on the open market. It appears clear that the crossbowman is being protected by the soldier behind him. The crossbowman’s shield has been pierced by a lance, and he is firing up-wards presumably towards some sort of fortification. He wears a hauberk and coif, such is the usual method of depicting mail. The soldier behind him wears a surcoat, the edges of which are carved with dashes, probably an example of the so-called ‘pricked style’. He is also wearing a pointed helmet (or cap) but without the ubiquitous Bayeux tapestry nasal bar. His own shield has also been pierced by a well-defined lance head, and he is holding what may be a quiver of bolts for the crossbow. Such quivers, which are of various forms, but which always flare towards the base. Alternatively, this may represent a flask of wine, held to refresh the crossbowman. The border of the piece is carved with a repeated pattern closely similar to others of the same ilk. The long brooch is of developed Anglian cruciform type, originally possibly fitted with iron sprung pin of type G. Crossbow and bows were the protagonist of the 100 Years War between France and England. The crossbow, a bow fixed at its centre to a wooden stock, was a formidable weapon used by the Genoese crossbowmen, mainly in French service; its heavy bolt could easily penetrate a shield or armour breast plate at close range. The longbow, mainly used by the Welsh archers, was able to pierce armours at greater distance. During the reign of Edward III, the long bow distance was estimated to be 400 yards. The capability of the English and Welsh archers enabled the English to secure a victory over the powerful French Cavalry at the battles of Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt. From the collection of the famous author, writer and speaker, Gordon Bailey, Essex, UK; formed since 1968. Lot 568

Ca. AD 900 - 1200 A set of two Medieval iron crossbow bolts covered in a rich russet-brown patina. Crossbows superseded bows throughout central Europe during the medieval period, with the notable exception of England and Wales. The crucial factor in the abandonment of bows on the European mainland was the time it took to train a competent user. A person could be trained to use a crossbow in just a few days, whilst an archer needed years to develop the muscle and bone structure necessary for the colossal draw-weights. Size: 82-89mm x 45641mm; Weight: 121g Provenance: Property of London gallery, acquired on the Austrian art market.

‡ A VERY FINE SOUTH GERMAN SPORTING CROSSBOW (HALBE RÜSTUNG), DATED 1587 with heavy steel bow retaining its original painted finish comprising a trellis design sown with flowerheads on the front, back, upper and lower edges, early cords, green silk pom-poms and string, iron stirrup, tiller swelling about the nut, inlaid and veneered over much of its surface with engraved staghorn plaques (very small restorations, light wear), the top applied with a large plaque over its entire surface, decorated on the right side with an elaborate contemporary woodland hunting scene ahead of a castle, the owner’s coat-of-arms and a herm and further mounted figures, on the left with figurative scenes after Joachim Meyer and a further scene including St Michael slaying the serpent, an amorous couple, scrolling foliage and ball flowers, the bottom engraved with the date around the cocking rod aperture, scrolls, a pair of marine monsters and a niche with the figure of Ceres, fitted with bone nut, a pair of iron lugs for a cranequin, horn bolt-clip, gilt copper alloy back-sight, a gilt copper alloy cartouche engraved ‘ehrlich zu leben und selig zu sterben’ (to live honestly, to die in blessedness), etched trigger-plate, leather-bound writhen iron trigger (small losses), and a gilt copper alloy plaque enclosing the top and butt of the tiller (a working life repair), the string with circular brass inventory tag ‘1438’ and the tiller with another ‘1365’ Provenance Frank Bivens The arms are for a member of the Princes Salm family.
