This work was exhibited along with 'The Little Blue Maids of Bristol' (Red Lodge, Bristol) at the Royal Academy in 1911 and was illustrated in Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopedia in 1912. The School, founded in 1634 by John Whitson, was originally for “women children” of “deceased or decayed” Freemen and Burgesses of the city. The girls wore the distinctive red uniform until its recent merger with Redland School. This ready-to-hang work is well-presented and in professionally restored condition. The work has been re-stretched, lined and wrapped to crop the viewable image (see images of verso), there is competent inpainting visible under UV throughout.
