William Holt Yates TITCOMB (1859-1930) The Red Maids of Bristol Oil on canvas, signed, 76 x 123cm, 86 x 133cm framedExhibited 1911, Royal AcademyDuring his time based in Bristol (1909-1930), Titcomb was attracted by the quaint costumes of the children in local philanthropic institutions and in addition to 'The Blue Maids' of Hooke's Orphanage (see Lays last Cornish art sale) he also painted the girls of The Red Maids' School during their annual service at the Lord Mayor's Chapel, Bristol. This work was exhibited along with 'The Little Blue Maids of Bristol' (Red Lodge, Bristol) at the Royal Academy in 1911 and was illustrated in Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopedia in 1912. The School, founded in 1634 by John Whitson, was originally for “women children” of “deceased or decayed” Freemen and Burgesses of the city. The girls wore the distinctive red uniform until its recent merger with Redland School. This ready-to-hang work is well-presented and in professionally restored condition. The work has been re-stretched, lined and wrapped to crop the viewable image (see images of verso), there is competent inpainting visible under UV throughout.

An unusual Great War 1914-15 trio to the City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders). 1914-15 Star Medal, “2822 PTE. W.L. PATERSON C. OF LOND. YEO.”, British War and Victory Medals, “2822 PTE. W.L. PATERSON C. OF LOND. YEO.”. Accompanied by a matching set of mounted as worn miniature medals and 3 fibreboard dog tags, 2 impressed “PTE PATERSON WL 151010 CE MGC” the other marked “PTE PATERSON WL 151010 CE”. Lot also includes the following related items Copy of the Regimental history, The City of London Yeomanry (Roughriders), published by Hamilton Press, 1936. Some damage to the top of the spine but co9ntents in good condition with all maps and photographs seemingly present; Services Rendered certificate for City of London Regiments, named to PTE W L PATERSON, CITY OF LONDON YEOMANRY (RR). This in glass fronted frame. 35 x 44cm; Riding crop, Pair of metal spurs made by Sowter & Co London, a spent bullet tip, white fabric rosette with metal Prince of Wales’s feathers to the centre and the portraits of a man and woman on the 2 streamers (possibly related to the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra). A selection of non-military documents including the recipients will (1977), copies of baptism record, copy of marriage certificate and other items. Born in 1892 in Holloway, London, William Lennox Paterson served with the 1st City of London Yeomanry in Gallipoli where he arrived on 30th October 1915. He later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps with service number 151010. During the Great War the Regiment served in Gallipoli, Egypt, Salonica and Palestine before arriving on the Western Front in April 1918 as part of E Battalion the Machine Gun Corps eventually bring renumbered as 103rd (City & County of London Yeomanry) Battalion M.G.C. William Paterson was disembodied on 7th March 1919. He died in Pinner, Middlesex, on 23rd December 1976.

A VINTAGE BOXED PORTABLE FIELD MICROSCOPE WITH A GROUP OF WALKING STICKS AND A QUANTITY OF BROWN PARCEL PAPER comprising a brass portable microscope in a box, boxed length 22cm (appears to be in working order, box has clear signs of wear commensurate with age), a gentlemen's riding crop with a bone handle with two silver mounts, indistinct hallmarks to the lower mount and marked 'G.J. Patchett Rugby 1920' to the upper mount, geometric carvings to the handle, an ebony walking stick with geometric carvings similar to certain Indian or Sri Lankan styles (remnants of a nail to the top indicate a missing handle, flecks of white paint), a wooden cane with a twisting pattern and metal band around the tip, a Shillelagh style walking cane, and a large quantity of brown packaging paper in a bag (3)
