Lot 242

Boer War interest, a very rare piece of Boer military equipment,  rudimentary chest webbing/ammunition waistcoat belonging to a Boer soldier, constructed from canvas and leather, 20 ammunition pouches for clips of five 7.92 Mauser rounds arranged in two rows of 10, the canvas pouches with no base so that the tips of the rounds would protrude from the bottom, leather flaps to hold the rounds in place, fastened by a mixture of brass buttons and studs marked 'Simplex Patent', a pocket is sewn to each of the suspension straps and also have leather flaps fastened by brass buttons, the webbing slips over the head and is fastened around the waist at the back by a large buckle, inside one of the pockets is a piece of notepaper with the name 'R. Schalkwyk' and an address written on it, in the other pocket are two lengths of loose cotton, the webbing was taken from a Boer prisoner of war by Major W. Penrose, also included is a large clasp knife, the knife is stamped 'TAKEN FROM A BOER PRISONER BY MAJOR W. PENROSE-17TH MAY 1900', it is not known where the prisoner was taken or if the two items were from the same man but 17th May was the date of the Relief of Mafeking and there were Boer prisoners taken during an attack on the 12th May by Field Cornet Eloff, as regards the note in the webbing, we have been able to find five Boers by the name of Schalkwyk who were taken prisoner during the conflict but none with the initial 'R' though it is possible that the note refers to another person and not the prisoner himself, it is also not known how complete the POW records are, it is certainly worthy of further research, Major Penrose was a relative, possibly Great Uncle, of Alexander .P.D. Penrose whose medals are also in this auction but his details, including regiment, are unknown to the current family, he is also related by marriage to the Coke family whose items are also in this auction, the items come direct from family (a Boer ammunition waistcoat can be seen on the Australian War Memorial website and were apparently popular with Boer Commandos)

Fully stocked in walnut with flat sided grips, horn fore-ends, vacant silver escutcheons to the wrists and base of butts. Cased in a brass bounded mahogany case with deep blue felt lining, patch box, wooden cap box, and balls. Included is a provenance note reading ‘This pair of ‘Horse Pistols’ were formerly the property of Cornet (afterwards Major General) Joseph Jerrard, bought about 1795, originally flint & converted to percussion – The arrangement on the locks for spare caps was an invention of Joseph Jerrads / F B J J 16 Jan 1908’ Research shows that the guns were bought in 1795, so they were purchased second-hand. It also reveals that Joseph Jerrard (born 1773) joined the 22nd Light Dragoons. They were raised in 1794, probably for the specific purpose of controlling the trouble which a frightened government realised was brewing in Ireland (they were disbanded in 1802/3, when things in Ireland had settled down). It would appear that Joseph Jerrard was recruited in 1794/5, and bought the pistols on his arrival in Ireland, possibly from another officer. While his future wife, who he met around this time in Ulster, had military connections, it is unlikely that the guns came from her family. Her family's sympathies were badly split, her stepfather being a Captain in the Newtownards Yeomanry, while two of her half-brothers and her brother-in-law (her sister's husband) were on the rebel side. They would have faced each other at Saintfield & Ballynahinch in 1798: one of her half-brothers killed at Saintfield. The young officer went on to become a Major-General and claims to have invented a fast-capping system, which he had installed on these pistols during the percussion conversion c.1825-1830: Essentially just 4 studs screwed onto each lock roughly where the frizzen spring had been located, and caps fitted onto these. See ‘A Directory of the Early Irish Gunmakers’ by D.J.W. Stroud, p.215.

He assumed the command at Malta in 1805, and from Malta he proceeded to Sicily and commanded his own regiment and a battalion of grenadiers as brigadier-general. As second in command, he commanded the 1st Brigade at the battle of Maida on 4 July 1806. In 1808 he was promoted to major-general and left Sicily in 1809.During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic period Cole had served in Ireland, the West Indies, Egypt, Malta, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula. In 1809 Cole asked to be transferred to the Peninsula where he was to gain further distinction when he was given command of the 4th division under Wellington. Cole missed the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815, much to Wellington's chagrin, because he was on his honeymoon, having married three days earlier Lady Frances Harris. On 15 August, however, Cole joined the army of occupation in France, and commanded the division until the final evacuation of France in November 1818.As well as representing Enniskillen and Fermanagh in Parliament Cole retired this position and went on to also serve terms as 2nd Governor of Mauritius (1823-1828) and Governor of Cape of Good Hope (1828-1833). Cole was one of the few successful Cape governors. Ably supported by Lady Cole, he played a prominent part in social philanthropy in the Cape. Colesberg, a town in the Cape, is named after him, as is Sir Lowry's Pass near Cape Town. Cole was also governor of Gravesend and Tilbury from 1818 until his death.Cole was promoted a full general in 1830. In 1833 he returned home with his family. He settled at Highfield Park, Hampshire where he died in 1842. He was buried in his family's vault at St Macartin's Cathedral, Enniskillen and is commemorated in Enniskillen by a statue surmounting a 30-metre (98 ft) column in Fort Hill Park, carried out by the Irish sculptor, Terence Farrell. Erected between 1845 and 1857, The Cole Memorial Column is a prominent feature of the Enniskillen skyline. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
