TWO PHARMACY/APOTHECARY/MEDICAL JARS | GERMANY | 18th century | 9. 19 cm (height) | Glass, painted enamel labels | Provenance: private pharmacy museum | Lot description | "FORTIS": on the front, which is set in an ornamental frame with a royal crown and rich decorations in blue and gold. The glass is made of clear glass and its richly decorated surface testifies to a high level of craftsmanship. Such jars were used to store strong or concentrated medicines, which were often rare and expensive. "KALI TARTARIC": which refers to "potassium tartrate" (also known as tartar), a chemical used in medicine and cooking. The glass is also richly decorated, with ornaments in gold and blue creating an elegant frame around the inscription. LOT OF 13 PHARMACY/APOTHECARY/MEDICAL JARS | EUROPE | 20th century | 17 cm (height) | Porcelain glazed, painted and printed labels | Provenance: private pharmacy museum | Lot description | "Sir. simpl.": refers to a simple syrup that served as a base for mixing other medicines. This syrup was used as a universal base ingredient for the preparation of various medicinal formulations. "Sir. Ratanhiae": refers to rattan syrup (Ratanhia), which was used for its astringent and tonic effects. This syrup was helpful in the treatment of various conditions associated with excessive fluid release or as a tonic to enhance health. "Sir. Aether.": refers to a syrup containing ether that was used as a sedative or anesthetic. This type of syrup was applied to achieve sedative or anesthetic effects. "Sir. Tolutan.": refers to syrup from Tolutan balsam, used as an expectorant in coughs. This syrup helped in the treatment of respiratory diseases by facilitating the expectoration of phlegm. "Borax pulv.": refers to borax powder, which was used as an antiseptic and in the manufacture of glass. This powder had antiseptic properties, which made it useful in various medical and industrial applications. "Caffeine Sodii": was a combination of caffeine and sodium, used as a stimulant and anti-migraine remedy. She is reported to have supplied (with her helpers) 600 pints of lemonade in a day and in one week they negotiated 11,000 portions to soldiers.The Cummings and Cuddons are linked by marriage.

A good Moritz Gottschalk model 3582 blue roof Dolls House, German circa 1902, exterior with paper lithographed brick and wood detail, basement windows and first floor windows with drapes, painted green steps leading to L-shaped veranda, with finely turned pillars and pierced metal balustrading, hinged painted green panelled door with metal handle, pitched blue roof and three chimneys, front opens in one wing to two L-shaped rooms, both with original papers to walls and floors, with a selection of furniture including tinplate cooking range, wooden fireplace, pair of chairs, four poster bed, ornaments and other later pieces, pencil number to base, 26” (66cm) tall, 17 ½” (44.5cm) wide, 13 ¾” (35cm) deep, (condition: wooden canopy and supports to ground floor window replaced and repaint to tops of chimneys).
