A late 19th century pearl and diamond brooch, the large pearl set within clusters of old-cut diamonds in foliate silver and gold collets with engraved decoration to reverse, length 4.4cm, caseAccompanied by SSEF report no. 81686, dated 27th August 2015, stating that the pearl is natural saltwater, weighing 28.716 carats and measuring 17.33-17.80 x 13.35mm.Provenance: formerly in the collection of Nancy Witcher Langhorne Astor, Viscountess Astor (1879-1964), MP for Plymouth, of Cliveden, Buckinghamshire. The pearl and diamond brooch originally belonged to Nancy Witcher Langhorne Astor, Viscountess Astor (1879-1964). Destined to become the first female Member of Parliament and one of the great society hostesses of her day, Nancy was born in Danville, Virginia, in the United States. She moved to England in 1905, having fallen in love with the country during a visit following the breakdown of her first marriage. Here, she met her second husband William Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor (1879-1952). They were married in 1906 and received Cliveden as a wedding present from his father. Nancy soon became a prominent society hostess from her new lavish Buckinghamshire estate, as well as their grand St James's Square house, now the Naval and Military Club. Her charismatic personality and independent nature is wonderfully captured in her portrait illustrated here, painted in 1908 by the great society painter John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) and now in the National Trust collection at Cliveden. She was elected to the House of Commons in 1919, where she remained the Conservative MP for Plymouth for twenty-five years, championing education reform and women's rights. Later in her political career, she also held the role of Lady Mayoress of Plymouth from 1939 until the end of the Second World War. Known for her wit and combative spirit, Nancy also had a great love of finery.

Gwen John (1876-1939) Gouache Woman wearing a green cloche hat, 1920’s, from an exhibition June/July 2021, catalogue no.25, signed, Browse & Derby label verso, 12cm x 11cm From the collection of the late Maurice Costley Gwen John was born in Wales and studied at the Slade followed by the Academie Carmen in Paris. During her years in Paris, John met most of the leading artists of the day, including Rodin for whom she modelled. John exhibited her work for the first time at the New English Art Club in 1900. Her paintings, although there are some still lifes, are mostly sensitive portraits of lone females, usually anonymous. John lived and worked mostly in Paris. However since her death, her reputation has been redeemed and in some circles she is thought of as the more talented of the two Johns. Her pictures are held in many public collections including the Tate and the National Museum of Wales.

1951 MG YA SaloonRegistration number UMG 214Chassis number Y6436Engine number XPAGSC13095Indigo blue and silver with a grey leather interior pipped in blueAffectionately known as MaggieFrom a deceased estateAn older restoration from the chassis upGarage stored for some timeGood history fileA scarce MG to see today, one of the later 6,158 YA's to roll off the production line at AbingdonWill need some re-commissioningFrom the family Here’s some information about Maggie: This classic 1951 MGYA was lovingly renovated by her amateur car restorer owner after finding her in 1985 as a rusty shell in a farmyard. This restoration was a personal labour of love with the owner doing all of the work by himself (with some guidance from a close family friend who restored vintage vehicles). He happily spent many hours in the garage stripping her down, rebuilding the engine, spraying the bodywork, re-instating the sunroof, polishing the woodwork, restoring the headlining and rear roller blind (with the help of his wife) and re-upholstering the interior in quality leather. Affectionately known as 'Maggie' the car was well-loved by the owner and his family. She was a regular at local car shows, including Tredegar Park and Margam Park, winning awards including ‘Car of the Show’ at Caldicot Castle. The owner was an active member of the Octagon Car Club and Gwent Classic Car Club. Sundays in the summer were spent taking Maggie on countryside drives, and she was also used for family weddings. She was a part of countless happy memories. In 2014, when the owner became too ill to drive, Maggie was carefully stored under blankets in the garage, where she has remained until now, waiting for someone new to appreciate her. The car oozes style and elegance with her indigo and silver bodywork, chrome detailing and grey leather interior. The silver cat emblem mounted on the petrol cap was added by the owner as a tribute to the much-loved family cat 'Penelope'. Comes with MOT certificates, tax discs, restoration photographs and some history. All lots in this sale are sold as is and bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Paul and his wife Margaret moved to nearby Dymchurch in 1921, the same year as this drawing. Nash's mental health was severely impacted by his wartime experience and this was a period characterised by inner turmoil and subsequent recuperation. Study in Pale Tones, the Pond at Oxenbridge is a break from the desolation of Nash's wartime works and a move towards the romantic depictions of the English landscape that characterised his work between in the decade that followed. Oxenbridge Farm in Iden was owned by close friends of the Nashes, Bertram and Kitty Buchanan. Bertram had also served as a war artist and they were frequent visitors to the farm which became a recurrent subject of many of Nash's 1920s works , including Fig. 1, Oxenbridge Pond, 1927-28 (Birmingham City Museums & Art Gallery). From Dymchurch, the Nashes moved to Oxenbridge Cottage in 1925, staying there until they left for Rye in 1930. λ DONALD CURRIE (BRITISH 20TH CENTURY) VIEW OF CHURCH STREET, INCLUDING THE CHELSEA ARTS CLUB Oil on canvas Signed (lower left) 36 x 46cm (14 x 18 in.) Provenance: Sir W. Guy Granet, G.B.E, bought directly from the artist (according to label on stretcher) Condition Report: The canvas has not been lined, but may benefit from being so. Rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges and throughout the canvas. Also with scattered craquelure, associated spots of loss, and surface dirt throughout. A dirty varnish is causing some discolouration, largely through the centre of the work. Inspection under UV light reveals no evidence of restoration or repair.
