A collection of circa 1900 Japanese cinnabar lacquered and gilt decorated bowls comprising a large bowl decorated with three Taoist figures with tea and mushrooms, raised on circular foot, signed to base, 29 cm diameter, another large bowl decorated with two figures seated with fish and turtle, signed to base, 22.5 cm diameter, a small bowl decorated with Japanese masked theatre figure, 11.5 cm diameter, another with grape and vine decoration, 11 cm diameter, a circular footed bowl decorated with two junks, 11 cm diameter, another small bowl decorated with junk, 8 cm diameter and a further bowl depicting an island dwelling with fence pattern and hills rising in distance, 9.5 cm diameter (7) CONDITION REPORTS All of the plates have damage of some description. The second largest has the most significant damage with old repair and damage to the old repair. Two of the middle size dishes have splits and the others all have damage of some description to the rims and feet. There is a whiteish bloom/faded effect to the decorated tops of all of them as well as dirt and surface scratches etc. See images for more details.

A Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer 'Lions' dish, 16th century, Ming Dynasty, the circular dish crisply carved through layers of red lacquer depicting four Buddhist lions surrounding a ribboned brocade ball amidst dense scrolls, coins and chimes, the reverse side carved with lotus blossoms borne on leafy foliage on a yellow ground, 17.8cm diameterPairs of lions playing with brocade balls convey the auspicious wish for blessings and joy. Compare with one similar dish sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2012, Lot 2105.
