In updating their range of chronographs, Tudor replaced the Valjoux Calibre 7734 movement with the manual wind Calibre 234, which offered greater accuracy and a more sophisticated chronograph mechanism with a clutch column wheel. In addition, the dials were offered in two colourways, grey and blue, with matching bezels. Reference 7149/0 was fitted with a fixed bezel with coloured tachymeter insert, 7159/0 had a satin steel bezel with etched tachymeter scale, and 7169/0, as in the present lot, offered a rotating bezel with 12 hour markers to record a second time zone. The watches were typically supplied with an Oyster link steel bracelet which evolved into the solid link type, reference 78360, as in the present lot.According to the vendor, the watch was purchased by her late husband who wore it sparingly on special occasions only and hence it is found in very good overall condition. Thomire & Cie and Louis Moinet, Extraordinary 3-piece clock set in Carrara marble and gilded bronze. Louis Moinet (Bourges 1768 - Paris 1853) was a watchmaker and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts at the Louvre. He invented the "compteur de tierces," the first chronograph ever made. Moinet is renowned for his watchmaking treatise published in 1848, considered the most beautiful watchmaking book of its century, detailing the finest watchmaking techniques. Louis Moinet collaborated with Thomire on various clocks, generally large prestigious models. After the renowned sculptor and bronzier Pierre-Philippe Thomire retired in 1823, his son-in-law and grandchildren continued the business under the name Thomire & Cie. This richly crafted clock features a bronze centerpiece signed Thomire & Cie à Paris, with a blue dial signed Thomire et Cie and Ls Moinet Hr Paris. Each of the two candlesticks is adorned with three horn-blowing Tritons, each supporting a head of a hunting dog, a fox, and a deer. A marble and bronze pendulum can be found at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This piece is a work from Paris, circa 1850. | Clock: 74 x 43 x 27 cm.Candlesticks: 77 cm.
