The English contents page lists 24 plates, each hand coloured, 20 are present, with Chinese contents page and index listing of each plate, within linen bound hardback folio, each plate 30cm x 43cm There is some discolouration and foxing to several of the plates, many are curled or folded at the edges, some typical wear overall. Colours remain bright.

First published in Latin in 1667, Kircher's hugely influential and ground-breaking work contains some of the earliest accounts of the geography, botany, zoology, religion, mythology and language of China. A QUEEN ANNE BLACK LACQUER AND GILT JAPANNED CHEST ON STAND IN THE MANNER OF STALKER & PARKER, CIRCA 1710 Finely decorated with subtle tones of green and ochre, finely detailed and outlined throughout in gilt, depicting houses within a naturalistic setting and groups of flowers 125.5cm high 102cm wide, 58.5cm deepJohn Stalker and George Parker first published their Treatise on Japanning and Varnishing in 1688. It was used as a pattern book, throughout the late 17th Century and early 18th Century while there was continuing interest in Chinese and Japanese lacquered furniture. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use Some old chips, splits and repairs. The surface appears original, it bears the expected wear, chips, minor losses and fading The handles and escutcheons are later replacements but are in period style and suit the piece well Lock plates vary from each other, but all have good age.
