Dennis ENDEAN IVALL (1921-2006) 'The Miner' and 'Old Quay & Cave, St Agnes Each watercolour and ink, signed, 25.5cm x 35.5cm; together with a 19th century miniature watercolour of a girl and a dog by a different hand, 10cm x 7cm. Dennis Endean Ivall was born in Essex in 1921, the youngest of four children. His father was then an accountant with ICI and his mother was a member of the Endean family of St. Agnes, so he visited Cornwall for holidays from an early age. He attended the Sir George Monoux Grammar School in Chingford, and then joined ICI. In the Second World War he enlisted in the Ordnance Corps, seeing active service in the retreat from Burma, and later in Ceylon and the Cocos Islands, where he reached the rank of Warrant Officer, First Class. After the war he trained as an artist and art teacher. Working at first as a freelance artist, he later became an art teacher in Barnstaple, North Devon – the nearest to Cornwall that he could get at the time. In 1973, Dennis took early retirement and moved to Cornwall, living at first at Ponsanooth and then for thirty years at Perranwell. He worked as a designer, a record agent and principally as a heraldic artist and designer, only retiring from this work when suffering from illness in the last three years of his life. Heraldic art was his great passion, and he carried out the design and painting of coats of arms for many clients across the world. He was the author of the book Cornish Heraldry and Symbolism and, among the work he carried out in Cornwall, was the painting of the organ panels at Cuby church, the repainting of the coat of arms at St.Dennis after the fire and the design and painting of a banner for St.Agnes and, of course, the banner of St. Piran in this church. Heraldry and his military service gave rise to an interest in army insignia and badges and, with Professor Charles Thomas, he was the author and illustrator of Military Insignia of Cornwall. He was a founder member of the Cornwall Militaria Group, and a long serving member of the Perranarworthal branch of the British Legion. His enthusiasm for heraldry led Dennis to join the Order of St.Lazarus, an international charitable order founded in the Holy Land. He was a member of the Commandery of Avalon in the West Country, and became Judge of Arms of the Commandery, of the Bailiwick of England and then of the whole order worldwide, attaining the rank of Knight Grand Cross. Although he was such a talented artist, with a worldwide clientele, he was always ready to lend his talents to local activities, whether painting scenery for Carnon Downs Drama Group, drawing posters for the Women’s Institute or touching up the lettering on the war memorial.

Icon of the Lord Pantocrator, made in 1891 in Moscow. The icon shows a half-length image of the Lord Pantocrator in traditional iconography: with an open book in his left hand and a blessing gesture of his right hand. The image was painted by a professional master in the academic style typical of Moscow workshops of the late 19th century. The silver gilded frame is decorated with shining enamels on the crowns, fields and corners, emphasizing the high artistic level of the icon. The icon is a striking example of the neo-Russian style, combining the features of historicism and modernism in Russian art at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. Hallmarks: silversmith`s marks in Cyrillic AM, presumably Mukhin Alexander Alekseevich, hallmarks of the Moscow assayer - Oleks Lev Fedorovich - initials L.O - 1891. Dimensions: 27x22.5 cm. Historical background: Mukhin Alexander Alekseevich - owner of a silver products factory in the 2nd half of the 19th century. In 1879 there were 12 workers. He made 100 pounds of various silver items, totaling 112,000 rubles. Including salt shakers, gospel frames, church utensils. Width: 22.5cm, Height: 27cm, Depth: 3cm, Weight: 2kg, Condition: Signs of wear commensurate with age, Material: Silver 84, Cloisonne enamel, Gilding, ID: ID-ANTQ-11173
The icon of the Lord Almighty, created in Moscow at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, is a half-length image of Christ in the classical iconographic tradition: in his left hand he holds an open book, and blesses with his right hand. The work was made by a professional master in the academic style typical of Moscow workshops of the late 19th century. The silver frame is decorated with a shining enamel crown, and its fields are covered with a relief chased plant ornament. At the bottom of the icon there is a plaque with an inscription made using the technique of pitted enamel. The icon is an example of the neo-Russian style, which combines elements of historicism and Art Nouveau, popular in Russian art at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Hallmarks: silversmith in Cyrillic NG, presumably Nikolai Yegorovich Grachev, Hallmark of the Moscow District Assay Office with the initials of the district manager Ivan Sergeevich Lebedkin, appointed in 1899. Hallmark with the image of a woman`s head in a kokoshnik, facing left, in an oval shield, on the right side are the initials IL, on the left side is the assay value 84. Dimensions: 31x27 cm. Historical background: Nikolai Egorovich Grachev, owner of a gold and silver workshop, 1897-1917, Russian Empire, Moscow. Width: 27cm, Height: 31cm, Depth: 3cm, Weight: 1.5kg, Condition: Good, Material: Champleve enamel, ID: ID-ANTQ-11252
George III Sterling Silver Jug by John Deacon, London, 1772This exquisite jug, made by John Deacon in London in 1772, is a superb example of British silversmithing from the time of George III. The interior of the jug is gilded, highlighting its luxury and status. The engraved and embossed rural scene on the outside depicts a farmer with a plough and a cow grazing in a field, adding a rural feel to the composition. Birds in flight decorate the spout of the jug, while the unengraved cartouche on the front is ideal for a dedicatory inscription, adding an aristocratic touch. The finial is in the shape of a cow, a popular symbol in decorative motifs of the period. The massive handle is complemented by an openwork element for easy opening, which gives the product additional elegance. Dimensions of the jug: height 24.5 cm, length 21 cm. Weight: 1042 grams. Hallmarks: master John Deacon, London, 1772, additional late hallmark HH Henry Holland, a famous master of the mid-19th century, active in London in 1840-59. Historical background: John Deacon was an outstanding English jeweler and silversmith of the 18th century, who left a significant mark on the history of British craft. His career began on January 19, 1759, when he was apprenticed to John Moore, a famous master of his time. The training lasted seven years, and on July 2, 1766, Deacon received the title of master, which allowed him to begin independent work. The first official record of his work as an independent craftsman is on 11 September 1776, when he registered his hallmark at 23 Greenhills Rents, St John Street. However, there is evidence to suggest that he began working earlier, as references to his activities can be found in a lost masters’ book before 1773. According to historian Heale, John Deacon is also mentioned as a goldsmith working in Addle Street in 1771. In 1773, John Deacon’s name appears in a parliamentary report as a minter at 1 Love Lane, Wood Street. This period of his career is characterized by high activity in the production of silver and jewelry, testifying to his skill and professionalism. Deacon’s work was respected and in demand among customers, which confirms his status in the craft environment of that time. Despite his creative success, John Deacon faced financial difficulties. In April 1775 he was registered as bankrupt in Wood Street, which probably led to the end of his professional career. However, his contribution to the development of English silversmithing remains an important chapter in the history of 18th century jewellery. Henry Holland (1842 – 1850) Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater was founded in 1838 by Henry Holland (the elder). In the same year he registered his first hallmark at the London Goldsmiths` Hall and began a partnership with Thomas Frercks, trading as Holland & Frercks in Clerkenwell. However, their partnership ended in 1841 when Frercks retired. Henry Holland continued the business on his own and around 1850 his eldest son, Henry Holland (the younger), joined him. In 1851 Henry junior was granted his freedom by the Goldsmiths` Company and the firm was renamed Henry Holland & Son. In 1866 the company expanded its scope by purchasing Elizabeth Eaton & Son and moving to Aldersgate Street. In the 1880s the business was taken over by John Aldwinckle and James Slater and the firm was renamed Holland, Son & Slater. In 1883 Henry Holland (junior) left the company and it became known as Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. Over time the partnership was joined by James Slater`s sons and in 1922 the company was acquired by Francis Higgins & Son Ltd. Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater continued in business until 1932. Width: 21cm, Height: 24.5cm, Depth: 21cm, Weight: 1.042kg, Condition: Signs of wear commensurate with age, Material: Silver, ID: ID-ANTQ-11580
The painting, executed in the manner of Marinus van Reymerswaele, depicts two tax collectors with grotesque faces, sitting at a table in clothes typical of the 15th century. The character closest to the viewer, dressed in a black turban and pince-nez, with a concentrated expression on his face, writes text in a book reminding tax evaders of their obligations before the law. The second collector, in a dark blue turban and red caftan, looking meaningfully at the viewer, points his hand to this text, clutching an empty coin purse in the other hand, emphasizing the need to replenish the treasury. The collectors` clothes stand out against the background of the interior, indicating the status and class of the characters . The faces depicted by the author emphasize the satirical meaning of the picture, hinting at human greed and stinginess. In this plot, the master created a grandiose satirical image of predatory financial capitalism, which arose in the light of the economic and cultural boom in Antwerp in the 16th century, which actually turned the once small Flemish city into the financial center of the world. According to experts, the recognizable scene of two misers was borrowed and recreated in many variations by the artist Marinus van Reimerswaele from the great Flemish author Quentin Massys. This plot was one of the most popular and recognizable in Europe during the period of the 16th - 17th centuries. Similar works adorned royal collections as well as collections of aristocrats and nobility of the time. Nowadays, Marinus van Reimerswaele`s works on the theme of Tax Collectors are part of the exhibition of museums around the world, including the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London and the Prado Museum in Madrid. The recognizable plot is located in Windsor Castle, in the king’s personal chambers, as well as in the Royal Collection of Liechtenstein. One of the paintings of Tax Collector attributed to Marinus van Reimerswaal is included in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, acquired from the heirs of the first Prime Minister of England Sir Robert Walpole at the end of the 18th century by the Russian Empress Catherine II. Registration No: F457 XWP Chassis No: WP0ZZZ92ZJS840533 MOT: NoneJust 77,200 miles from new as supported by twenty service stamps plus old MOTs and invoicesEntered from a deceased estate and bought by its late (seventh) owner for £24,995 in 2019Subsequently treated to over £8,000 worth of expenditure with Porsche Centre ChesterOffered with book pack including handbooks and the stamped service bookLast serviced in June 2023 (c.100 miles ago)Introduced at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show, the 928 was conceived (and priced) as the flagship of the Porsche range. A luxurious GT, it was styled in-house by American Tony Lapine as a replacement for the ageing, compromised 911. Ultimately, it failed to usurp its tail-heavy sibling despite becoming the only sports car ever to win the European Car of the Year title in 1978. Built around a galvanised steel monocoque, it made extensive use of aluminium for its wheels, doors, bonnet, transaxle housing, front suspension wishbones, rear suspension uprights, upper links and main cross member. This practice not only saved weight but also contributed to the near perfect 49:51 weight distribution. Available with a choice of manual or automatic transmission (housed in its award-winning passive rear steer Weissach transaxle) the 928 was regarded as a crushingly capable Grand Tourer. The subject of a continual development programme, it evolved through S and S2 guises before the arrival of the S4 version in Autumn 1986 (the 'S3' being a US market only model). Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds and 165mph, the newcomer was powered by an enlarged 4957cc DOHC 32-valve V8 that developed some 316bhp and 317lbft of torque. Equipped with air conditioning as standard, the aerodynamically improved S4 was visually distinguished by a reprofiled nose and revised tail (the latter incorporating new light clusters and a larger spoiler). Finished in the classic combination of Silver with Black leather upholstery, this UK market (C16) example was supplied new via Charles Follett Ltd of London to G. MacKay Esq. Equipped with an electric sunroof, Blaupunkt stereo and automatic transmission, the 2+2-seater is warranted to have covered some 77,000 miles from new. The twenty stamps in its accompanying service book begin and end with Porsche main dealer entries. Entered from a deceased estate, the late owner became the Coupe’s seventh keeper when he bought it from SJ Specialist Cars Ltd of Wigan on 30th March 2019. Despatched to Porsche Centre Chester at the end of that same year, ‘F457 XWP’ had attention paid to its fuel system, exhaust, undertray, rear windscreen wiper spark plugs, headlamp washers and brakes (new discs and pads all round) plus a service at a cost of £6,519.34. Little used since returning to the same garage for another bout of maintenance at 77,104 miles on June 8th 2023 (£969.43), the 928 S4 was noted to be losing coolant during our recent photography session. An enticing prospect despite the need for some recommissioning, this handsome, low mileage 928 S4 is offered with the V5C Registration Document, original book pack, Porsche-branded in-car telephone and assorted old MOTs and invoices. Fitted with the 2.2-litre straight-four engine allied to the desirable six-speed manual transmission, the Alfa Romeo is finished in Black paintwork with a Black hood and matching Black leather interior upholstery. Having had just four former keepers, the Spider has covered 95,000 miles from new. Benefitting from a new timing chain kit and balancer belt kit in 2018, the Alfa Romeo has recently received brake attention in 2021.Accompanied by the book pack in the Alfa Romeo wallet which contains the owner’s manual, guides and stamped service book, ‘PL07 UKA’ has a strong service history with fourteen services (plus the PDI) documented across the service book and further invoices, with the most recent being completed in June 2023 at c.93,000 miles. Also included in the history file are a collection of invoices, MOT certificates and MOT history, a no advisory MOT certificate until March 2025 and a current V5C document, as well as two sets of keys and the original tool kit and jack. Registration No: A20 XXX Chassis No: SAJJNADW3DA151756 MOT: May 2025Just c.47,000 miles from newResided its whole life in the Derbyshire village of BamfordJust two owners from newHighly original and offered with a history file including the original bill of sales invoiceLaunched in 1975, Jaguar's XJ-S was designed to seamlessly blur borders rather than blast down back roads and so came with automatic transmission as standard. Though, when fed the quoted 295bhp and 318lbft of torque developed by a post-1981 H.E. (high efficiency) 5.3 litre V12 engine, this still resulted in a claimed top speed of 150mph and 0-60mph in less than eight seconds. Introduced at the 1988 Geneva Motor Show, the long-awaited full convertible version featured a reinforced floorpan, frameless doors and a sophisticated electric hood. Underpinned by the same all-round independent coil-sprung suspension and power-assisted rack and pinion steering as its Fixed-Head Coupe siblings, the soft-top came with anti-lock brakes as standard. Priced at some £40,000, a waiting list was quick to form.Supplied new by Hatfields Jaguar of Sheffield and first registered on the 14th June 1988, this XJ-S is believed to be one of the first 1,000 V12 Convertibles produced. Finished from the factory in Signal Red paintwork with Magnolia leather interior upholstery and a Black hood, the Jaguar also has a Black hood cover. The first owner, a gentleman residing in the Derbyshire village of Bamford, purchased the XJ-S as a retirement present for himself and therefore was passionate about the car, reputedly never using it unless the day was entirely clear weather and was garaged throughout his custodianship. Following his passing in 2018, the vendor purchased the Jaguar having known both the car and first owner due to also being a resident of Bamford, and continued the same care routine for the XJ-S.Providing with a full respray, wheels re-annodised, and undersealing by WatJag upon purchase, the vendor has since lavished ‘A20 XXX’ with brake attention, and a new power steering rack, actuator and reservoir in 2020 costing over £3,000, as well as a new battery in 2023. Offered now with just c.47,000 miles on the odometer, the XJ-S is accompanied by the original sales invoices and a letter from the dealership director to the first owner; a collection of invoices and MOT history; no advisory MOT until May 2025; JDHT Heritage Certificate; and the current V5C showing just one former keeper. Also accompanying is the original book pack, in the Jaguar carrier with the handbook and service book, as well as the original Jaguar tool kit, jack, touch-up paint pen, and stereo cassette.Such low mileage and ownership examples are few and far between, and this one having resided in a Derbyshire village its whole life, is certainly one to consider. Registration No: T755 GAN Chassis No: SAXXNWAZEXD172323 MOT: June 20251 of just 250 UK-supplied 40 limited editions and 1 of just 50 in this colour schemeJust c.53,650 miles from new and only three former keepersIn the current Mini-enthusiast ownership since 2016Pleasingly unmolested example and offered with a history fileThe Mini 40 was launched in 1999 to mark the 40th anniversary of the production of the Mini. Based upon the latter day Cooper S and therefore using the multi-point fuel injection engine, only 800 examples were manufactured, of which a mere 250 were earmarked for supply to the home market. The penultimate Mini limited-edition model produced and suitably luxuriously appointed, the '40' boasted a full-leather interior with piping complemented by a brushed-alloy dash incorporating additional instruments and a radio/CD player. The dashboard top was leather as were the gear-knob grip and door pockets. The driver's airbag and front seatbelt tensioners were other features unheard of when the original had been launched, while externally, a large bore exhaust finisher, twin driving lamps, body-colour wheel-arch extensions and 13" Minilite-style alloy wheels shod with low profile tyres, enhanced the look, as did spotlights and a bonnet badge with an embossed gold crest. One of the 250 UK-supplied examples, ‘T775 GAN’ was sold new via Faraday Rover of Newbury, being first registered on the 30th April 1999. Finished in the classic Island Blue paintwork (1 of 50) with Prussian Blue leather interior upholstery, the '40' was purchased into the current Mini enthusiast and serial-Mini owner's hands in 2016 and has been an attendee of numerous Mini shows and events whilst in their possession. Now offered displaying just 53,650 miles from new, this limited edition Mini has just three former keepers. Pleasingly unmolested and presented in the original specification, the '40' is offered with a history file that includes the original book pack in the Mini wallet containing the owner’s handbook and stamped service book, MOT history, and a current V5C document, as well as the original jack. A very rare Mini variant, especially as a UK-supplied example, that would grace any collection. For more information, please contact: Paul Cheetham paul.cheetham@handh.co.uk 07538 667452
