Made of beech wood, which is easy to carve, and decorated with pastiglia, a Renaissance technique that uses plaster in relief covered with gold leaf or gilded paint. This type of decoration was common in Northern Italy, particularly in Padua and Venice, to adorn furniture and domestic objects. An early 18th century Dutch walnut casket with inlaid banding, serpentine front and base drawer, 28cm wide, 18cm deep, 15cm high Walnut on oak.
