Condition Report: Some light foxing to the front two blanks and back page 218 with a couple of slight marks at edge. Pages with expected light age toning, some minor foxing here and there. Overall, internally generally ok, tightly bound. Leather binding with a couple of very slight marks / scuffs but generally good. A lovely copy in a unique binding.The page block appears clear from any stamps on all three sides. The page numbering ends at 218 with one blank page following. No library stamps internally.

Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, 1762 Palmanova – 1844 Mailand ANKUNFT DES FRANZÖSISCHEN BOTSCHAFTERSÖl auf Kupfer.20 x 27,5 cm.In vergoldetem, ornamentreliefierten Rahmen.Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dario Succi, Gorizia, ohne Datum, in Kopie. Von diesem der Hand des genannten Künstlers zugeordnet.Am 5. November 1726 erreichte der Französische Botschafter König Ludwig XV, Jacques-Vincent Languet, Comet de Gergy (1675-1734) Venedig und blieb bis zum 28. Oktober 1731 in der Stadt. Ganz im Vordergrund sind die vergoldeten und aufwändig mit Schnitzwerk verzierten Gondeln des Botschafters zu erkennen. Die bedeutendsten Bauwerke Venedigs ließen sich damit ins Bild bringen: der Dogenpalast rechts mit der anschließenden Piazzetta und den beiden Säulen, die Bibliothek des Sansovino, aber auch die am gegenüberliegenden Ufer des Canal Grande stehende Kirche Santa Maria della Salute. Diese Gebäude rahmen die fast unüberschaubare Menge der Figuren und heranziehenden Gondeln, aber auch großen Segelschiffen, die die Anwesenheit von Besuchern aus weiterer Ferne andeuten. Das Gemälde basiert, wie auch eine weitere Wiederholung, die sich 1939 in der Sammlung Dimitri Tziracopoulo in Berlin befand, auf einem Gemälde von Canaletto, das 1727 als Auftragsarbeit des Botschafters entstand, in den Besitz der Zarin Katharina II gelangte und sich nun in der Eremitage St. Petersburg befindet.Der Künstler war ein italienischer Maler des Klassizismus, er studierte in Brescia und befasste sich mit dem Werk von Girolamo Romanino (1484/87-1562). Später zog er nach Venedig und setzte sein Kunststudium unter Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) fort. Von 1834 bis 1838 unternahm er eine Reihe von Reisen, die ihn u. a. nach Florenz, Rom, Neapel und Paestum führten. Mit seinen Venedigveduten begründete Bison ein kommerzielles Genre, um der Nachfrage von Touristen und Sammlern nachzukommen. Neben zahlreichen Venedigansichten schuf er auch idyllische Fantasielandschaften. Dabei ist die Vielfalt seiner Themen sowie die hohe Qualität seiner Bildproduktion hervorzuheben. Im letzten Jahrzehnt des 18. Jahrhunderts arbeitete er mit dem Architekten Gian Antonio Selva zusammen, so etwa für die Dekorationen des inzwischen nicht mehr existierenden Palazzo Bottoni di Ferrara und dem Casino Soderini in Treviso. Er studierte Werke von Guardi und Gian Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804), wirkte auch als Freskant in Venedig, begab sich nach Treviso, Padua und Triest, 1833 schließlich nach Mailand, wo er bis zu seinem Lebensende blieb.Literatur:Vgl.
