An angular openwork hoop enlarged on the phitomorphic-shaped shoulders to form a bezel securing an oval red garnet intaglio depicting the profile of the bust of the goddess Minerva made in an idealised manner. Ca. AD 100 - 300. A gold ring with a round hoop enlarged on the shoulders to form a round bezel securing a red carnelian intaglio. The intaglio depicts a bust in profile of a noblewoman made in a stylised manner typical of the second and third century AD. Ca. 350 - 300 BC. A delightful terracotta squat lekythos featuring a globular body on a flat base and a vertical handle, adorned with geometric and foliate motifs in white on a black ground around a bust of a lady of fashion facing left. The face is made in a naturalistic manner. The vessel displays lustrous areas of silvery iridescence that enhance its elegant form. Ca. AD 100 - 200 . A bust of the goddess Minerva. The goddess wears a helmet pushed back upon her head. Minerva has parted the dense, bulging hair under the helmet in the middle. She has large, deeply set silver inlaid eyes with punched pupils and a delicate mouth with finely curved, thick lips. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 97.22.10. India, Ca. 18th - 19th century AD. A large trophy possibly from a horse-drawn coach or of the prow of a barge or ship. Possibly from an allam or ceremonial banner. Depicting the bust of a turbaned man, engraved with inscription on the left shoulder Sultan Hazrit affixed to a silver-coloured steel crescent moon-shape inscribed on both sides immediately below Sultan Selim Khan Hazrit, with an arc of floral and vegetal decoration embossed below. On the lower spike is a dated inscription showing the year 1335 A.H. which corresponds to 1917 AD. Below the steel crescent a brass brace is fitted allowing the object to be secured to a pole or other fixture. WILLIAM THEED THE YOUNGER (1804-1891) A WHITE MARBLE PORTRAIT BUST OF A LADY DATED 1844 Signed to reverse "W THEED FECIT ROMA 1844" approximately 52cm high, 45cm wide The records show only one portrait bust exhibited by Theed in this year - Lady Elizabeth Culling Smith. Working in Rome he did a lot of private patronage work and it could be that this was someone on the Grand Tour in Rome. Condition Report: Please note the below condition report is the only one available. With weathering (colour variance from exposure), wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Surface staining and dirt in crevices. AN OVER LIFE-SIZE ROMAN MALE PORTRAIT HEAD OF CONSTANTINE THE GREAT (C.272 - 337) EARLY 4TH CENTURY AD Wearing the 'Imperial Oak Wreath' the decorative border of his 'tunic' can still be clearly seen on the left hand side, modern stand bust 38cm high, 24.5cm wide, 25cm deep Provenance: Ex Private collection, Cambridge, England Literature: Rinaldi Tufi, S., Yorkshire. 'Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani (Great Britain)'; vol. 1, fasc. 3, Yorkshire. Oxford University Press, 1983; 23, no. 38, pl. 12 In AD 306, Constantine was hailed emperor in the Roman city of York; he was the first emperor to convert to Christianity. Following his campaigns in the Eastern provinces, Constantine was recalled in 305 AD to fight alongside his father in the province of Britannia. After his father's death in 306 AD, Constantine was acclaimed as 'imperator' by his army at Eboracum (York) eventually being declared victorious after the civil wars against emperors, Maxentius and Licinius to become sole ruler of the Roman Empire in 324 AD. Constantine's Christian belief cannot be underestimated, establishing the foundations of 'Western Christendom'. In 313 AD he was influential in the proclamation of the 'Edict of Milan, declaring tolerance of Christianity within the Roman Empire. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the purported site of Jesus's tomb in Jerusalem, was built on his orders, considered the holiest place in all of 'Christendom'.
