Kidd Esq, The Manor House, Sherborne, Warwickshire Private CollectionPlease note, the cataloguing for this lot should read as follows and not as originally printed in the catalogue:A SCARLET LACQUER AND GILT CHINOISERIE DECORATED BUREAU CABINET IN QUEEN ANNE STYLE, 18TH CENTURY AND LATER ELEMENTS Condition Report: Cabinet with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Various splits, chips, cracks and losses. The lacquer and gilt decorated surface appear to be entirely later. Various craquelure, chips, splits, losses, flaking, and wear to surface throughout. The upper and lower sections are associated. The lower bureau section appears to be a George III bureau which was not originally lacquer decorated. The upper section is significantly adapted. It incorporates some period elements but has been adapted to make the top double domed and for the doors to incorporate the shaped mirror plates. Overall, the piece incorporates period timbers but has been significantly adapted to make its current form and incorporates various later elements throughout. There are no signs of a previous decorated surface, therefore it has been decorated after being structurally modified. Mirror plates have depletion, 'foxing' and grey spots. Two keys present but only one operates the lock to the fall. No keys present for the other locks, but all locks are open. The locking bar to the fall does not remain in position as the timber where it secures has losses. Metalware throughout is later associated but is in period taste. The escutcheon to the fall front is lacking but present with the lot. Some evidence of old worm to the underside, backboard and interior of carcass.
