A boulder opal and gem-set pendant by Andrew Grima, 1984, the cabochon emerald and brilliant-cut diamond surmount suspending a polished boulder opal cabochon drop, mounted in 18ct gold, signed ‘GRIMA’, maker’s mark ‘AJ.Ltd’, London hallmark, length 5.5cm. £2,000-£3,000 --- Andrew Grima (1921 - 2007) was born in Rome to Italian-Maltese parents. Raised in London, he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Nottingham and during World War II, joined the Royal Engineers and served in Burma. After the war he started working in his father-in-law’s London jewellery firm. From 1951, when his father-in-law died, Grima took over the business, selling it to a gemstone dealer in Knightsbridge on the condition that he stayed on as a designer. Entirely self taught, his limitless imagination led him to create bold and striking designs – each piece being hand wrought, and typically only creating one of each design. In 1960 Grima’s talent was spotted by the Art Director at Goldsmiths’ Hall, Graham Hughes, who introduced his protégé to many of the rich and famous people who were to become his clients. In 1966 his success was sealed when Prince Philip chose one of his pieces, a stunning ruby brooch, as a present for the Queen, 1966 also being the year that Grima received his royal warrant. In the late 1960s he opened his exclusive gallery in Jermyn Street, Mayfair – the opening event being hosted by Lord Snowdon, then married to Princess Margaret, and his reputation continued to grow, attracting a clientele of royalty and society jet-setters of the day. Winner of numerous awards for his contribution to the jewellery industry, including the Duke of Edinburgh Prize for Elegant Design in 1966, and the De Beers Diamonds International Award – he won it 13 times (more than any other jeweller) – today Grima is recognised as being one of the great modernist jewellery designers of the 20th century. Condition Report General light surface wear commensurate with age and use. The emeralds with inclusions typical to the nature of the stone and the diamonds bright. The boulder opal with veins of green and blue. Gross weight 9.8gm.

Wilhelm Schmidt: A boulder opal cameo pendant/ brooch, late 19th century The large oval opal and opal matrix cameo, carved to depict a warrior in profile looking right, within an engraved border with geometric detailing, unsigned, cameo 7.0 x 4.2cm, pendant length 9.6cm Wilhelm Schmidt (1845-1938) was a German cameo carver, born in the global centre of gem cutting, Idar Oberstein. In 1874 he pioneered a novel new technique of carving opal cameos to also display the natural gem matrix. This use of the original opal matrix, traditionally discarded by carvers, allows for depth of field in the cameos. This technique lets the opal's play of colour spring forth against a dark background. The first example of Schmidt's opal carvings was exhibited by John Brogden at the Paris Exhibition in 1878. Although by this time the trend for cameos was in decline, the admiration for Schmidt's unique work garnered him many high profile patrons and admirers such as the late Victorian art critic John Ruskin.Schmidt very rarely signed his work but this cameo is highly representative of his style. In particular the imagery of various exotic and classical warriors, and the delicate carving of feathers.

RAMSAY RICHARD REINAGLE (BRTISH 1775-1862) A HUNTING DOG HOLDING A CAT AT A BAY IN A WOODLAND, 1793 Oil on canvas Signed, dated, and inscribed 'R. R. Reinagle 1793 AE: sui 18' (centre left) 150 x 120cm (59 x 47 in.) Provenance: Sale, Christie's, London, 19 November 1982, lot 8 Sale, James Adam & Sons, Townley Hall, 10 October 2017, lot 422. Private collection, UK, acquired at the above sale Exhibited: (Probably) London, Royal Academy, 1793, n. 282, as 'Portrait of a favourite dog' Son of the painter Philipp Reinagle (1749 - 1833), Ramsay Richard executed this picture at the precocious age of 18 and had begun exhibiting at the Royal Academy five years earlier. The sure handling of composition and chiaroscuro belies the artist's youth. Taught by his father, Ramsay Richard was strongly influenced by 17th century Dutch painters of nature such as Ruisdael, Potter and Wouwerman, and he occasionally reproduced their works. Reinagle was an adept painter of animals, hunting scenes and landscapes, and the influence of these earlier artists is often detectable in his paintings during a period when earlier Dutch art was highly collectable in Britain. Adapting these modes to appeal to a contemporary audience, Reinagle made sure to depict subjects and themes which could appeal to the English country gentleman and often portrayed hunting scenes prominently featuring English breeds of dog. In this composition a water spaniel has cornered a wild cat up an oak tree and a standoff has ensued. The scene has been caught with a theatrical spotlight effect using the backdrop of a large sandstone boulder. The spaniel has chased the cat away from its prize of a dead bird which now lies before the spaniel's front paws, its feathers littering the ground. The spaniel, however, appears to be less interested in stealing the cat's kill than in enjoying having cornered the furious feline, which scrabbles and hisses angrily on a tree branch. Beneath them both the broken body of the bird lies suspended by foliage over a pool of water which separates the viewer from the battle. One might read this scene as a metaphor for the struggle between civilisation and wilderness: the well-groomed, domesticated spaniel tackling a savage, leering cat. A feather of the innocent bird dangles from the cat's claws, evidence of its crime.
