CAPTAIN DONALD JOHN GREY, R.M. (1901/2-1944) - AN IMPORTANT MILITARY COLLECTION showcasing his military career with the Royal Marines, comprising 1914-18 medal and Great War medal awarded whilst a Private in the R.M.L.I, a George V silver waiter by Gladwin Ltd, Sheffield 1929, engraved ‘Presented to Lieut D.J. Grey by his Brother Officers, The Depot R.M. Deal’, dated 7th December 1929, a Chinese 90 standard silver tankard engraved ‘Presented to Capt. Grey by ‘M’ Section H.K.V.D.C.’ (Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps) dated 1937, his tunic, swagger stick, two portraits and dress swordProvenance: By direct family descent. Literature: There is a lack of documented information about Donald Grey, but by family repute, Donald, or Johnny as he was known, was walking down the street circa 1916/7 when a stranger gave him a white feather. Although he was only sixteen he looked older and this affront caused him to try to sign up, however the only service that would take on a sixteen year old was the Royal Marines. He joined up initially for hostilities only but fell in love with the Marines and received his commission and stayed on, with one of his postings being Hong Kong. At the outbreak of war, he was seconded to Vickers Armstrong and worked with R.J. Mitchell to conceive the Grey and Mitchell bombs, as well as working on desalination units for submarines.Sadly Johnny met with a premature end - whilst riding his motorbike to a demonstration of one of his new designs, he hit a rope across the road that was supposed to warn of an unexploded bomb up ahead, but the sign had fallen off. He was badly injured, sent to a plastic surgery hospital where he was given the wrong blood group and he died of pneumonia late in 1944.Johnny left behind his wife, two young children and an unborn baby.

Lot 174

Photograph of Sergeant Stephen Burns, 617 Squadron, RAF, Part of the Crew of P/O Geoffrey Rice on the famous ‘Dam Busters’ Raid, Operation Chastise 16th / 17th May 1943, being a postcard photograph of him in Air Gunners tunic with we believe his sister. Also images of his grave in Belgium and an image of his brother in Royal Navy uniform. Accompanying the images is an other ranks RAF cloth waist belt which has been decorated with various British military cap badges. All items came directly from the family by the current vendor, see lot – for family medals. Other items of Burns career in the RAF were sold at auction in 2016. Flight Sergeant Stephen Burns was from Dudley, Worcestershire. He enlisted in the RAF in January 1941 and qualified as an Air Gunner. He was first posted to No57 Squadron operation out of RAF Scampton. He joined the crew of Geoffrey Rice as a rear gunner. His crew were transferred to the newly formed 617 Squadron, and trained for the special bombing operation, later known to be Operation Chastise, the low level bombing mission using Barnes Wallace’s bouncing bomb, also known as the Dam Busters raid. Burns and his crew were part of the second wave of the operation that night, their target being the Sorpe Dam. Their aircraft was soon to be the only plane on the mission of their wave, as the others were either shot down or had to return to base. However disaster also stuck Burns and his crew, as their aircraft flew too close to the water at Vlieland, resulting in them hitting the water and their bouncing bomb was ripped from its mounting. Burns gun turret was soon filled with water, which he had to smash through to drain the water out, resulting in him exclaiming to the pilot and rest of the crew, ‘Christ, it’s wet at the back, Skipper’. The mission now could not be completed, so they head for home, but the landing system had been damaged so the crew had to take precautions. Luckily the plane landed safely back in the UK with all crew members. Burns continued to serve with his crew until they were shot down on the night of 20th / 21st December 1943, when they were tasked with attacking the armaments factory at Liege, Belgium. Everyone except the pilot, Geoffrey Rice was killed, their bodies recovered and buried by the Germans in Gosselies Cemetery, Belgium. Full details and accounts of both actions can be found in the research material which accompanies the lot.

AUCHENTOSHAN 21 YEAR OLD LOWLAND SINGLE MALT 43% ABV / 70cl Auchentoshan is part of a small minority of Scottish distilleries, in that every drop of whisky it produces is sold as a single malt.
