Denovan Adam, R.S.A., was born in Glasgow in 1842, but early in life was taken by his parents to London, where he received his early education as an artist from his father, who was a landscape painter. He studied afterwards for some time at Kensington, making frequent sketching tours in Scotland, especially in the Highlands, with his father. He showed a decided preference for animal painting, especially Highland cattle, and many of his best-known works represent these in their native surroundings. In 1871 he took up his residence permanently in Scotland and in 1887 he established a school at Craigmill, near Stirling, for the study of Animal painting. He first exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy in 1868, and among his numerous works may be mentioned, “ Herding the Kye,” “ Looking for Orders,” “The Cottar’s Daughter, “Within the Fold,” “Highland Stots,’ “ Sunset, Craigel- Lachie," “Highland Interior,” “ Calves,” “Balmoral, the Queen’s Highland Home.” He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1884, and an Academician in 1892. He was awarded medals for his works exhibited in Munich in 1892; and in 1894 the French Government did him the honour of offering to purchase one of his works, “ Evening Strathspey,” exhibited in the Salon, which, however, he had to decline, as the picture in question was his Diploma Work, the property of the Academy. Twenty-four of his paintings are held in UK public collections including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, Paisley Museums & Galleries, The National Trust for Scotland, Kelvingrove Gallery, The Ulster Museum and the Royal Scottish Academy.

A good vintage signed Christmas greetings card by both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip individually, the small 4to stiff cream folding card featuring an image to the inside depicting the Queen and Prince Philip seated in full-length poses on picnic rugs on the south lawn of Balmoral Castle, accompanied by their young children Prince Charles and Princess Anne, as well as the infant Prince Andrew and a corgi. Signed ('Elizabeth R') by the Queen and signed ('Philip') by the Prince, both in fountain pen inks to the lower border beneath the image, and dated 1960 in the Queen's hand. With a printed greeting opposite and two gold embossed royal ciphers to the front cover. Some light overall foxing, otherwise VG

The Princess thanks her correspondent ´for your charming letter of good wishes for my birthday´, although apologises for writing in English ´because I am so very out of practice in French´, further commenting on the recent weather, ´It has been so lovely here for the last 2 weeks, with hot sun & cold air, & we are all quite brown! Scotland is so beautiful when the weather is lovely´ and also adding that she had been pleased to receive a birthday card from Elizabeth (´so beautifully written for one so young´) before continuing ´I too, was amused to read of the Agamemnon´s cruise, for I was one of those invited! But I couldn´t manage to go, & I thought, after reading about it in the papers that I was really having more fun here!´. Accompanied by the original Registered Express delivery envelope hand addressed by Princess Margaret and signed by her with her initial (´M´) to the lower left corner. VGGeorgina Reinhold had been Princess Margaret's French tutor.
