A rare black-ground Sèvres hard-paste plate, circa 1791Asiette uni, fond noir chinois en or platine, decorated with a black ground over its entire surface in imitation of Chinese lacquer, the chinoiseries after Jean-Baptiste Pillement, in two-tone tooled gold and platinum, the rim with three individual cartouches in the same manner, 24.4cm diam., interlace double L enclosing date letters oo for 1791, painters mark 2000 in gold for Henri-François Vincent (le jeune) and Bn for Nicolas Bulidon, (flat chip inside footrim)Footnotes:The Production and Legacy of Black-Ground Sèvres Porcelain (1778-1794)For a discussion of decoration in imitation of lacquer, see Selma Schwartz, Chinoiserie Decoration on Black-ground Sèvres Porcelain, in M. Köpplin (ed.), Schwartz Porcelain - The Lacquer Craze and its Impact on European Porcelain, vol. III (2003), pp. 98-107.With the rise of Neoclassicism in the 1770s, there was renewed interest in the furniture of André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) as well as furniture inspired by his designs. Their materials: tortoiseshell, brass, and tin, in their black, gold, and silver appearance matched perfectly with lacquer objects. In fact, the inventories of some of the most prominent lacquer collectors show that their furniture was more often in the Boulle genre rather than made from lacquer. Selma Schwartz (op.cit., pp.98-107) explains the incorporation of lacquer imitation beyond the obvious technical advancements. In the late 1780s, a series of important lacquer furniture was delivered to the French court, including pieces for Versailles, Saint Cloud, Compiègne, and Bellevue; for Louis XVI, his aunt Adelaide, and Madame Victoire. Notably, Jean Henri Riesener created furniture for Marie Antoinette in 1783 (now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, see catalogue illustration), intended for her Grand Cabinet Intérieur at Versailles. This furniture harmonised with the collection of Japanese lacquer boxes inherited from her mother, Empress Maria Theresa (1717–80) of Austria, by reusing choice fragments of seventeenth-century Japanese lacquer as veneer. The interest in creating porcelain that resembled lacquer and related experiments seem to have started in Sèvres around 1769, shortly after the manufactory began producing hard-paste porcelain. This was driven by the new technical possibilities and the ongoing fascination with East Asian lacquer. Two documents in the Sèvres archives (Archives, Cité de la céramique, C2/9) suggest that the manufactory explored the process of producing lacquer, possibly for applying lacquer decoration to already fired pieces. In one letter, a Parisian manufacturer of vernis (imitated lacquer) describes his recipes and the process of using black and white lacquer on porcelain. The second document, signed by the director of the manufactory, Melchior François Parent (1772-78), specifies the mixture ratios for black and red lacquer and the application of gold. However, it would take another ten years before the first lacquer imitations were produced.Between 1778 and 1782, the Sèvres manufactory produced a remarkable series of porcelain decorated in imitation of lacquer. This included a notable series from 1779 with black ground colours, achieved using a combination of iron oxide, cobalt, and manganese. These black backgrounds were often adorned with gold and silver decorations, echoing the renewed taste for lacquered furniture. However, the production was marred by technical difficulties related to the tarnishing nature of silver. Platinum, which does not tarnish, quickly replaced silver. In April 1790, the Comte d'Angiviller, Director-General of the King's Buildings and in charge of the Sèvres Manufactory, wrote to Antoine Régnier , the new director of the manufactory (1778-93), congratulating him on acquiring 3.5 pounds of platinum:It was an acquisition not to be missed, and I strongly approve of it. For I rely heavily on this new kind of decoration that no other manufactory will certainly achieve(Archives, Cité de la céramique, H5 vol.1, sincere thanks to Cyrille Froissart who first published this reference).Notable Productions and SalesBetween 1790 and 1793, Sèvres created around forty pieces with black grounds, decorated with coloured gold and platinum. These included vases, flower bowls, water pots, candlesticks, tea services, and table services. The first of these services, though with a sparser decoration of polychrome flowers on the cavetto, was sold on May 6, 1791, to the Marquis de Sémonville (1759-1839), Louis XVI's ambassador to Genoa. A second service was purchased on 4 April, 1792, by James Milmes (sic), consisting of 48 plates at 48 livres each. Some plates featured enamel flowers, while others had entirely black backgrounds with Chinese figures in gold and platinum, similar to our plate. James Milmes, as listed in the Sèvres archives, likely refers to James Milnes (1755-1805), heir to a wealthy Wakefield woollen merchant and member of Parliament. Milnes was an inconspicuous Member. He joined Brooks's Club, sponsored by Fox, on 17 May 1803 and a week later voted with the Whigs on the failure of negotiations to prevent the resumption of war with France. In late 1794, Citoyen Empaytaz & Compagnie, a company acting as agents for the King of Prussia, bought part of a black-ground service produced in 1791 that remained in stock. This service, composed of 71 pieces including 21 plates, a mix of black ground pieces with others featuring polychrome flowers on a white background. Provenance and LegacyIn the 19th century, specifically in 1844, Prince Nicolay Borisovich Yusupov (1750-1831) owned 107 pieces of the black-ground service. By 1887, the Yusupov family possessed only 32 pieces. Fifteen of these are now housed at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, including five plates with entirely black backgrounds (see Nina Birioukova and Natalia Kazakevitch 'La porcelaine de Sèvres du XVIII siècle' The Hermitage Museum (2005), pp. 189-193, nos. 946-954). Twelve plates are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Christian Dauterman, Sèvres (1969), p. 52, pl. II); and two others are in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City (cat.no. 33-1369 and 33-1370). Two 'seau à demi bouteille' dated 1791 are in the Getty Museum, Malibu (Adrian Sassoon, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain (1991), no. 30, pp. 152-157). A jug and two hexagonal double-gourd bottles are in the collection of Belton House, Lincolnshire, NT 433527 (Patricia F. Ferguson, Ceramics: 400 Years of British Collecting in 100 Masterpieces (2016), p..). Two plates were sold at Christie's in New York in 2010 (Christie's, New York, 22 October, 2010, lot 639) and another plate was sold in 2018 from the collection of Christophe Perlès, Pescheteau-Badin, 18 June, 2018, lot 120). The source for the central scenes on the plate can found in the work of Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808). The prints after Pillement used at Sèvres can be found in Jean Avril's 'Cahier de Balançoires chinoises' of circa 1770, and the image used for this plate is on the title page (see catalogue illustration). V, no. 94-11, pp. 1075-1078.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A RARE PAIR OF CHINESE EXPORT BLACK LACQUER AND GILT DECORATED FOLDING CARD TABLES EARLY 19TH CENTURY Each with D-shaped hinged top enclosing a baize-lined playing surface, decorated overall with Chinoiserie trellis and scrolling vines, the top, frieze and sides centred by oval medallions decorated with Chinese landscape and architectural scenes each 77cm high, 91cm wide, 44.5cm deep Provenance: Purchased Christie's London, 3rd December 1970, Lot 96 These elegant games tables demonstrate the success of the Chinese export trade in combining Asian art with Western forms to appeal to the European market during the 18th and 19th centuries. Lacquered furniture was being made in such centres as Nanking, Tonking and Canton, following Western forms copied from examples sent to China or from printed European designs. It reached a high point of production and popularity with the Western trade during the early 19th century, when these examples were made. While Western designs were being copied, these games tables are unusual in their demi-lune form. Carl Crossman in his The Decorative Arts of The China Trade describes a pair of tables that may be this very pair, although unfortunately they are not illustrated. A related pair of tables with similar decoration was sold, Christie's, London, Wilton Crescent, A Robert Kime Interior, 23rd July 2020, Lot 121 (£27,500) Condition Report: Both with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Surfaces with flaking, marks, losses and cracks - see images. Various old repairs where the legs meet the friezes - see images. Various old metal supporting brackets between the backs of the legs/undersides of the tables. Some fragility to the joints of the legs/movement within the frames. Some later timber batons to the undersides of the tables/interior of carcasses. Later baize surfaces to the interiors of the tables. These have the expected minor wear. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

To protect against this, people used customs like drinking realgar wine, hanging Zhong Kui pictures, and employing "Five Poison" charms featuring snakes, scorpions, centipedes, toads, and spiders, believed to be "poisonous" creatures.People thus display objects adorned with motifs of the Five Poisons and wear clothing with patterns depicting these creatures during the Duanwu Festival to ward off evil and invite good fortune. Our pair of finely crafted cloisonné narcissus bowls should be considered as a festive display item for affluent families during this auspicious time.

A LARGE HUANGHUALI APOTHECARY CABINET (YAOGUI) WITH FOURTEEN DRAWERS, EARLY QING DYNASTYChina, 17th-18th century. The rectangular frame set with a pair of finely figured paneled doors fitted flush with the surface and opening to reveal a pair of smaller doors beneath three rows of three sets of drawers, enclosed by two smaller drawers on both sides and a single larger drawer beneath it. These two smaller doors open to an inner cabinet with a carved frame. Each drawer is fitted with elegant baitong pulls, the exterior with foliate door escutcheons with loose rectangular pulls, rectangular hinges, and loose ring handles set to the sides also made of baitong. From a French private collection, acquired from the above and thence by descent. A copy of a Certificate of Antiquity from Tomlinson Antique House, with photos of the present lot and dating it to the 18th century, accompanies this lot. Tomlinson Antique House was established 1976 in Singapore and specializes in antique Chinese furniture and Asian antiquities. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, showing old wear and traces of use, light surface scratches, natural age cracks and splits, small losses, tarnishing to the baitong fittings. Possibly with minor replacements, as expected from ancient Chinese furniture with an age of 250 years or more. Overall with a magnificent naturally grown patina, thus displaying exceptionally well.Weight: 52 kg Dimensions: Height 73 cm, Width 71.7 cm, Depth 39 cm Cabinets of this size and form are generally described as traveling bookcases if the interior contains shelves, and as apothecary chests if there are numerous drawers, as in the present example. The large size and luxurious hardwood render these forms quite heavy and not easy to move, and thus they are often described as table cabinets. In fact, the drawers could have been used to store a variety of things from treasured scholarly objects to cosmetics and accessories.Expert's note: See Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Dynasties, vol. (2)This inlay technique is called 'sanggam', which was invented by Korean ceramic artists in the twelfth century. The design was incised into the clay body of the vessel and then filled with slip (diluted clay). The excess slip would have been removed before the piece was biscuit fired, then the bottle was covered with a translucent celadon glaze and fired again. The development of the sanggam inlay technique signifies the elegance and innovativeness of Goryeo ceramic production; no similar inlay technique was used by Chinese craftsmen at this time.Literature comparison: Compare a related bowl with floral medallions dated to the 12th-13th century, 18.7 cm in diameter, in the Princeton University Art Museum, reference number 2006-831.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 28 March 2006, lot 448Price: USD 9,600 or approx. John Scott Bradstreet (American, 1845-1914). Entire room of Asian inspired "jin-di-sugi" carved cypress wood paneling including a fireplace and the ceiling. The fireplace with a carved panel of a sun among waves and two monopodial faux-legs with dragon heads and ball and claw feet. The wainscoting with carved panels, each depicting unique flora and fauna including: a crab, a dragon, lotus pods and flowers, water lilies, a bat, a kingfisher, chrysanthemums, and a turtle. There are a total of eight panels along the walls; two along each wall. The wainscoting is divided into three registers: a low horizontal lower register; a tall rectangular divided middle register; and a square upper register with alternating plain and carved panels. The ceiling with three beams and 12 panels; six panels slightly shorter than the length of the room due to the presence of the fireplace. Please note that this lot must be removed from its location by the end of August, 2023.Born in Massachusetts in 1845, John S. Bradstreet moved to Minnesota in 1873 and began working for the furniture firm Barnard, Clark, and Cope. With a heavy emphasis on late Victorian styles, Bradstreet felt that the items they were selling were too old-fashioned. Throughout the late 1870s and into the turn of the century, he worked with various partners to create furniture more in line with the growing popularity of the Gothic Revival and English Arts & Crafts movements. By 1901 he had founded his own business which focused primarily on his growing love of Asian inspired furniture and architecture - in particular, Japan. After opening the Minneapolis Crafthouse he was able to finally display and design his own works including his favorite line called "jin-di-sugi." This was a combination of Japanese carving techniques and American Arts & Crafts style, shown in the room offered in this lot. With his involvement in the growing aesthetic style of Minneapolis and as a heavy promoter of the arts in the city, he would go on to become one of the founders of the Minneapolis Fine Arts Society in 1883. This society would eventually evolve into the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He died only five months short of the institute's opening, and a room was opened in his honor, the John Scott Bradstreet Memorial Room, on January 7th, 1915.(Entire Room) 12 ft 2 in x 13 ft 2 in. (Mantle) height: 54 1/4 in x width: 76 in x depth: 25 in. Carved panel on mantle; height: 10 in x width: 13 1/4 in. (Wainscoting, 8 total panels) height ranges from 24 in to 54 1/2 in. [height ranges include below the window and include variance from panel to panel due to the room settling]. Total length of all wainscoting excluding the fireplace: 25 ft 10 in. (Carved panels excluding fireplace panel) height ranges from 10 in to 10 1/4 in; width ranges from 10 in to 11 in. (Chair rail) depth: 1 1/4 in.Condition: The wood in the room is in overall fairly good condition. There is light wear throughout as expected with a room of this age. Dust collected in the recessed areas of the works. There are small finishing nails throughout the wainscoting to affix the paneling to the wall of the room. There are four spaces for outlets, two spaces for light switches, and four areas where lights have been affixed to the panels. Several small areas where cord clips have been nailed/drilled into the paneling. There is one panel with an approx. 2 inch chip to the wood along the lower edge. The following carved panels have splits to the wood: the crab, the water lilies, the bat, and the chrysanthemums. The carved panel depicting a sun and waves along the mantle also has several splits along the center. There is wear to the top of the mantle. Numerous wax accretions, likely from candles, light scratches, a few small divots, dust, and an approx. 1 inch chip. Wear to the edges of the mantle throughout. There appears to be an extension added to the back of the mantle where it has been extended outwards to accommodate for modern use. This addition along the back measures approx. 8.75" x 63.25". There are six vents on the fireplace; two on either side and two along the top in the addition area.

In the 1950s, the market for Chinese art in Germany was insignificant yet between 1955 and 1959 Hauswedell in Hamburg sold several important Chinese archaic bronzes. Like the present gui , quite a few of these vessels had illustrious late 19th and early 20th century provenances, at least one bronze vessel had been in the Imperial collection, see Dr. Ernst Hauswedell & Co, Hamburg, 9th December 1957, lot 4. Similarly, the provenance of this bronze gui can also be traced back to the first half of the 20th century. The 1958 Hauswedell catalogue entry notes that the Ya Chou Fu Xin gui had first been published by Huang Jun (1880-1951), a prominent Beijing dealer in Chinese antiquities and owner of Zungu Zhai, a well-known Beijing antique shop founded by his uncle. Huang Jun, also known by his literary name Huang Bochuan, had been trained in foreign languages, and was fluent in German, English and French. He was well acquainted with Western collectors and dealers living in Beijing at the time. Huang Jun handled, studied, collected, and eventually sold many important archaic bronzes. His interest was academic as well as commercial, and he published several catalogues on archaic bronzes including the Zungu zhai suojian jijin tujuan (1936) and Ye zhong pianyu erji/sanji (1937 and 1942).These catalogues were printed in small numbers and were made using the most advanced techniques. Objects were illustrated in collotype technique, a laborious photomechanical flat printing process that allowed to reproduce the fine lines and varying tones and shades of the works more accurately than traditional rubbings used to duplicate archaic bronzes in older catalogues. A collotype print of the Ya Chou Fu Xin gui appears in the Zungu zhai suojian jijin tujuan next to a rubbing of the inscription cast on the interior, see Zungu zhai suojian jijin tujuan, Beijing, 1936, vol. I, 47. Subsequently, the collotype technique was used by other collectors and researchers documenting archaic bronzes including Duan Fang and Rong Geng. Gustav Ecke, another German living and collecting in Beijing at the time also adopted the collotype technique in his publications of two important German collections of archaic bronzes, and it is in one of these that the Ya Chou Fu Xin gui reappears in 1943. It was included in Gustav Ecke's seminal catalogue of twenty-two archaic bronzes from the important collection of Hans-Juergen von Lochow (1910-1989) and is illustrated in collotype and with several detail rubbings as well as the inscription , compare Gustav Ecke, Sammlung Lochow: Chinesische Bronzen, Beijing, 1943, pl. XI a-d. Hans-Juergen von Lochow was a German railroad engineer who lived and worked in Beijing between 1921 and 1955. He formed an important collection of Chinese art which comprised modern and classical Chinese paintings, furniture, and archaic bronzes, many of which are now in the Asian Art Museum in Cologne. Von Lochow acquired many pieces in his collection in Beijing from fellow German Otto Burchard (1893-1951), a renowned Berlin Chinese art dealer who had emigrated to China in the 1932. Other pieces were bought from Huang Jun (1880-1951). Of the twenty-two archaic bronzes illustrated in his catalogue, many later found their way into Western museum collections, very few remained in private hands, the present Ya Chou Fu Xin gui being one of them. The Ya Chou Fu Xin gui that was documented in the von Lochow collection in 1943 disappeared after it was last published, and only briefly reappeared in the 1958 Hauswedell sale catalogue. When he returned to Germany in 1955, Hans-Juergen von Lochow was officially allowed bring what was left of his collection of Chinese art including the remaining archaic bronzes. There is no information whether the Ya Chou Fu Xin gui remained in the von Lochow collection or if it changed hands. The provenance information on several archaic bronzes in the Hauswedell catalogues formerly in the von Lochow collection is surprisingly detailed and matches the information noted in Gustav Ecke's catalogue, suggesting that these bronzes may have been consigned by von Lochow at the time. A LARGE 'FIVE DRAGON' WOOL CARPET, QIANLONGChina, 1736-1795. Finely woven with a central front-facing five-clawed dragon writhing around a flaming pearl, encircled by two pairs of confronting sinuous dragons, each chasing a pearl, surrounded by swirling clouds, bordered to the long sides with bands of pearls, key-fret, and the Eight Buddhist emblems alternating with floral designs, each end with a terrestrial diagram above lishui stripe.Provenance: From the personal collection of Michael B. Weisbrod, New York, by repute acquired at Sotheby's in the 1990s for approx. USD 30,000. Michael B. Weisbrod is a noted scholar of Chinese art, who has published extensively on the subject over a time span of more than 50 years. In 1972, Michael joined his father Dr. Gerald Weisbrod's Asian art gallery in Toronto, Canada. The father-and-son team opened their New York location on Madison Avenue in 1977, and during the next 45 years the gallery held a significant number of exhibitions, selling to museums and private collectors across the globe, eventually adding further locations in Shanghai and Hong Kong.Condition: Overall fair condition with extensive wear, minor fading to colors, losses and tears, possibly minor old repairs.Dimensions: Size ca. 480 x 350 cmWhile the dragon itself is the symbol of the emperor, the number five is most auspicious and represents the 'Five Blessings (wufu)' of old age, wealth, health, virtue and peaceful death. The design of 'Five Dragons' also alludes to the 'Five Dragons of Yanshan (Yanshan wulong)', named after the five sons of Dou Yujun, who lived in Yanshan during the Five dynasties period (907-960), each of whom achieved exceptional success with their father epitomizing the ideal parent. The Eight Auspicious Buddhist Symbols (bajixiang) amongst the dragons in the design are also unusual and suggest the possibility of the rug being used at Buddhist ceremonies or on special religious occasions. However, it also demonstrates the level of creative freedom exercised by artists during Qianlong's reign who were encouraged to produce pieces with one-off designs. See a zitan closet, where the bajixiang is carved amongst dense ruyi-form clouds, from the Qing Court collection and still in Beijing, included in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (II), Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 206, and a red sandalwood throne also carved with dragons and clouds, where the bajixiang is used as a design element on its own, ibidem, pl. 26.Literature comparison: A related Imperial dragon carpet dating from the 18th century is illustrated by R. (1925-2018)Major General Sir John Swinton began his military career in 1944 with the Scots Guards, rising in rank to Major General in 1976. He was also Brigadier of the Queen’s Body Guard for Scotland (Royal Company of Archers) in 1977, and retired from Army life in 1979. With his strong military background, he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for Berwickshire in 1980 and Lord Lieutenant from 1989 to 2000. A high point of his tenure was escorting the Stone of Scone back to Scotland in 1996.The Swinton family history and ownership of land in Berwickshire can be traced to the early part of the 12th century, when Ernulf de Swinton received one of the first private charters recorded in Scotland which confirmed his property from David I of Scotland (1084-1153). This is one of two original charters of David I kept in the cartulary of Durham; both are to Ernulf and also refer to Ernulf’s father (Udard), grandfather (Liulf) and great-grandfather (Eadulf) as holding the land before him. This would make Eadulf the first landowner of Scotland whose ownership could be proved, and means that the Swinton family would by this hypothesis be one of only three (the two others being the Arden and Berkeley families) that could trace its unbroken land ownership and lineage to before the Norman Conquest, making it one of the oldest landed families in Britain.Kimmerghame itself was the site of an earlier house, the home of Sir Andrew Home in the 1730s. The lands and estate of Kimmerghame came into the ownership of the family of Swinton in 1776 when Archibald Swinton of Manderston married Henrietta Campbell of Blythswood in Glasgow. This older house was demolished and rebuilt in the early 1850s, the architect being the celebrated David Bryce, who employed some materials from the older house. Bryce’s Scots Baronial house was substantially damaged by fire in 1938 and only partially rebuilt. The family still retains Kimmerghame and its contents.Captain Archibald Swinton (1731-1804) went to India in the service of the East India Company as a surgeon. He reached Madras in 1752 and took part in the campaigns being waged between the French and English Companies for supremacy in the south. He also took part in an in expedition 1756-57 to Negrais in Burma. He reached eastern India for the first time in 1759 when he arrived at Ganjam in Orissa and from there went on to Calcutta. He also transferred from being a surgeon to an ensignship in the Company’s Bengal army. When Archibald Swinton left the Company’s service at the end of 1765, he took with him a letter from the Emperor to King George III asking for help to reseat him on the throne of his ancestors, since Clive would not do so unilaterally; Swinton took a munshi with him in case the answer should be written in Persian. So ‘Captain Swinton, bringing with him the Munshy (sic) (and including in his baggage the large Indian jars, the Indian pictures, Chinese pictures painted on glass, numberless ivory, silver and crystal handled arms, jewels, Persian books, etc. etc.), sailed from India …’ The important group of Indian paintings and other works of art are now in the care of the National Museum of Scotland having been accepted by the nation in lieu of inheritance tax.The Swinton family have had strong connections with the Army and the legal profession. He also took part in an expedition 1756-57 to Negrais in Burma. Part of their impressive collection was sold at our saleroom in Five Centuries: Furniture, Paintings and Works of Art sale on 23 Feb 2022, and subsequently Fine Asian & Islamic Works of Art on 13 May 2022, lot 150-159

Returning to the U.S. after being stationed in Berlin at the end of the Second World War, he studied at the Whitman School of Design before opening Joseph Rondina Antiques on Madison Avenue in Manhattan's Upper East Side in 1957. In the beginning, his interests focused primarily on European 18th-century decorative arts and furniture, over time developing to include Chinese, Korean, Indian, Thai, Cambodian, Persian and Japanese art, bringing a more esoteric and exotic style to the market. His clientele included stars of the stage and screen, royalty, notables, dignitaries, and denizens of the social register from the United States and abroad.Condition: Some old repairs and touchups as generally expected from Tang dynasty excavations. Losses, fissures, and encrustations. Drilled holes from sample-taking. Overall very good condition.Dimensions: Height 84.3 cmThe Tang dynasty is undoubtedly one of the most artistically exciting periods in China's long history. The arts are characterized by their diversity, the cosmopolitan nature of their design and the high technical skill employed in their manufacture as this pottery example amply demonstrates. In the first half of this dynasty, up to the An Lushan rebellion of 756, the level of luxury enjoyed by the court and the Tang elite ensured the production of a wide range of goods of the highest quality. As China prospered as a result of trade with the west along the famous Silk Road, camels became increasingly important for the transport of wares, since these impressive animals could carry heavy loads over long distances, surviving several days without water. As their large and broad feet did not sink easily into the sand, they became known as 'the ships of the desert'. Many camels were imported from the states of the Tarim basin, Eastern Turkmenistan and Mongolia and are known as Bactrian camels. The Tang civil servants created a special office to supervise their breeding and services. It seems that no pottery examples showing Chinese riders have been excavated. Perhaps only the Central Asian foreigners were able to tame and guide the camels.Literature comparison:A related large painted pottery group of camel and foreign rider, dressed in a fur coat and wearing a large pointed hat, excavated from the tomb of Wang Chen (buried 679), Changzhi, Shaanxi province in 1954 and now in the Museum of Chinese History, Beijing, is illustrated by Li Jian (ed.), The Glory of the Silk Road, Art from Ancient China, The Dayton Art Institute, 2003, p. 170, pl. 85.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's London, 5 November 2019, lot 4 Price: GBP 75,000 or approx.
