MANCHESTER CITY 1904 FA CUP WINNERS SPECIAL GOLD MEDAL A specially struck 1904 F.A. Cup winner's medal commissioned by Manchester City FC for their squad player R. Dearden who was not selected for the final tie,in 15ct. gold by Vaughton of Birmingham, a variant on the Football Association design with the three lions shield replaced by the Manchester crest, inscribed MANCHESTER CITY F.C., WINNERS OF ENGLISH CUP, 1903-04, R. DEARDEN A kind gesture by Manchester City FC for one of their fringe players. Dearden was essentially an understudy for first-team half-back Samuel Ashworth. He played in six League games during season 1903-04 but did not start in any of the Cup ties. A highly unusual medal Ref GA

A Masons Patent Ironstone part dinner service - early 20th century, transfer decorated in dark red with a designs of ruins in landscapes, printed and impressed factory marks, comprising a five graduated serving platters (1 x 38 cm / 2 x 33 cm / 2 x 27.5 cm); 12 x 26 cm dinner plates; 12 x 24.25 cm salad plates; 11 x 18 cm side plates; a covered two-handled serving dish and spare cover, plus two very similar covered serving dishes by Ashworth Bros, Hanley, some pieces a/f.
Volunteer Force Long Service Medal, E.VII.R. (Major T. W. Ashworth. 5 VB. Manch: Rgt.) officially engraved naming, minor edge bruising, good very fine £80-£100 --- Thomas Wilding Ashworth was born on 18 September 1866 and was educated at Rossall School, where he joined the Rossall School Cadet Corps, rising to Colour Sergeant (’H’ Company, 1st V.B. Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment); he was also captain of the Rossall School shooting team. In March 1885 he was appointed Lieutenant in the 20th Lancashire Volunteers (2nd Manchester Regiment) before he had even left school. He was promoted Captain in July 1888, and on 2 April 1898 he joined the 5th (Ardwick) Volunteer Battalion, being appointed Major, and by 1902 had been appointed Adjutant. He was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal in 1904 and resigned his commission in December 1904. Having retired to Bath, Somerset, he died there in 1939 at the age of 74. Sold with copied research.

A. J. Oxby. 3250906. Gdn. Hlds.’, mounted as worn, very fine Four: Private F. Ashworth, Highland Light Infantry, who was killed in action in North-West Europe on 23 September 1944 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with named Army Council enclosure, in card box of issue addressed to Mr. H. Ashworth, 78 Greenwood St., Oldham, Lancs’, extremely fine (10) £120-£160 --- Alfred J. Oxby was born on 28 June 1917 and attested for the Gordon Highlanders, serving with the 51st Division in North Africa, Italy, and in North-West Europe. He is recorded as having been wounded in North West Europe, although the date is not recorded. A note with the lots states that he ‘fought at the Second Battle of El Alamenin, in Italy, and took part in the Normandy Landings, and was taken Prisoner of War in June 1944, in the immediate aftermath of D-Day’, although this information remains unconfirmed, and Oxby’s name does not appear in the latest published transcript of Prisoners of War of the British Army held in Germany. Frank Ashworth was born on 15 May 1920, the son of Mr. Harry Ashworth, of Oldham, Lancashire, and served with the 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry during the Second World War. He was killed in action on 23 September 1944 during the Battalion’s advance into Holland, and is buried in Valkenswaard War Cemetery, Holland. Valkenswaard was the first village to be liberated on the main line of the British advanced into Holland in September 1944.
