18th century | height: 14 cm | region: Liguria | country: Italy | provenance: private pharmacy museum | Albarello faience pottery | This albarello comes from Liguria, Italy and dates back to the 18th century. Made of earthenware, it was used to store pharmaceutical mixtures. The inscription on the front "Pil: de Feru" indicates that the jar contained iron-based pills, which were used at the time to treat anemia and other health problems associated with iron deficiency. The jar is decorated with blue geometric patterns, which are emphasized at both ends by arch motifs, typical of ceramics of this period. Gothic calligraphy completes the decoration, with the dark lettering contrasting with the soft white background and blue decorative elements. This albarello not only fulfilled its function in pharmacies, but also provides insight into artistic traditions and pharmaceutical practices in northern Italy during the 18th century. | Bidders are requested to inquire about the condition of the lot prior to the auction. Carved, gilded and polychromed Eucharist chest. Possibly France. Gothic. Circa 1300.21 x 27,5 x 18 cm.A marvellous chest for liturgical use that retains most of its original polychromy and gilding, although with some losses. The front and back, although not identical, have very similar decoration based on thin, stylised pointed arches with a marked Gothic aesthetic, finished with a half-pointed arch with three cavities inside, resembling stained-glass windows on the front. The sides are identically decorated with geometric and vegetation elements. It has a gabled lid that, on its front side, is decorated with branches which hide different types of flowers amongst them. On the other side it has two large rosettes like those found in the stained-glass windows of the most prominent Gothic cathedrals. The decoration is enriched by borders of dotted gold, sometimes single and sometimes double, which, when it was placed there, was intended to resemble goldsmith's work. The chest still has its original hinges, but the lock is missing.Inside, the lower part is painted red and the upper part depicts a blue sky with red and gold stars. The lower natural-wood strip that runs around almost the entire perimeter is modern, to complete what had been lost and strengthen the structure.
R. Taylor, an early 19th-century 8-day oak long-case clock, the painted broken arch dial bearing the portrait of Queen Caroline, the hood with swan neck pediment, 47 cm wide x 25 cm deep x 220 cm overall height.Formerly of Donnington Castle House, near Newbury, Berkshire Formerly of Donnington Castle House, near Newbury, Berkshire The glass of the hood is cracked. There are no weights or pendulum, so not in working order.Updated:The movement looks very clean and looks as if it has been recently restored and re-gutted.The cheeks that support the movement are uneven. It would seem that a packing block is missing from the right-hand side. This causes the dial to sit awkwardly in the hood/mask. It is common for these to be replaced. The hood door has a cracked glass panel, the clock has some patches to the veneers. The trunk door does not have a key.The clock does not have either weights or a pendulum. In short this clock would need some work to make good but it looks as if most of the horological work has been done, but sadly it will require a pendulum and weights.

AN ILLUMINATED DALA'IL AL-KHAYRAT BY MUHAMMAD BIN SULAYMAN AL-JAZULI (D. 1465) Possibly Balkans, Western Ottoman Provinces, dated 1211 AH (1796 AD), signed by Muhammad Bin HassanArabic manuscript on European watermarked lined paper, 380ff. with 7 fly-leaves, with 27ll. of black ink naskh script to the page, the illuminated and polychrome-painted opening folio with a large, cusped arch in-filled with floral interlace, the text without diacritics, important passages underlined in red ink and marked with gold roundels, illustrated with an illuminated rectangular cartouche depicting a three-quarter aerial view of the two sacred enclosures of the holiest sites in Islam, the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca with the black Ka'ba in the centre and the Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet's Mosque, in Medina, the text set within black and red rules, and narrow gold borders, signed by Muhammad Bin Hassan and dated 1211 AH, accompanied by a note in French on one of the final fly-leaves referring to the location of its finding (Serbia), in a gilt printed brown calf leather binding with flap.16.3cm x 10.2cm the text panel23cm x 16.5cm the folio The handwritten French note accompanying this manuscript mentions that the tome was found in Serbia during WWI. It was retrieved by Maurice Guillier, the Lieutenant of the 260th Regiment, during the evacuation of the Serbian villages on the border with Ottoman territories in December 1915. The unusual horizontal format of the illuminated illustration of Mecca and Medina's sacred enclosures together with this provenance note raise interesting questions about the origins of this manuscript. The lack of diacritics in the text and rather plain naskh script point towards a provincial Ottoman production, perhaps in the Balkan regions, well before the rise of Balkan nationalism and independence movements, which triggered revolutions and anti-Islamic sentiments throughout the area from the early 19th century onwards. 16.3cm x 10.2cm the text panel, 23cm x 16.5cm the folio Qty: 1
