Edinburgh Angling Club: a silver presentation snuff box by Nathaniel Mills, the lid engraved with a creel, rod, nets and a landed salmon, the remaining surfaces engine-turned and with applied foliate thumbpiece, with gilt interior, maker’s mark, Birmingham 1847, contained in contemporary morocco leather case, dimensions 6 x 8.5cm. £600-£800 --- The interior engraved with black letter inscription ‘To David Wilkie Esqr from The Edinburgh Angling Club’. Condition Report The outer case with jeweller’s address to the inside silk for Mackay & Chisholm, 49 North Bridge, Edinburgh, within a garter. Snuff box - lid with slight rubbing to engraved surface decoration. Case - small loss of leather around the swivel catch. Weight 119.5gm.

Whistler (Rex) Engravings...for Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Introduction by Anthony Rota, out-of series copy (not for sale) from an edition limited to 100 copies on hand-made paper, this one of 26 unnumbered copies with one of the original copper plates, engraved title-vignette and 25 engraved sheets comprising 12 plates, 5 maps, 4 head- & 4 tail-pieces by Rex Whistler, the 12 plates hand-coloured, loose as issued, with copper plate in recessed panel inside rear board and printer's original paper wrapping featuring the engraving mounted inside front board (soiled), a little oxidisation to plate and loose from panel, together in original half viridian morocco drop-back box, very slight discolouration to spine, large 4to, Harrison's for H.M. Fletcher, 1970.*** Whistler's illustrated version of Swift's Gulliver's Travels was his magnum opus, first published by the Cresset Press in 1930 with 195 copies on hand-made paper and 10 on vellum, and one of the most magnificent English illustrated books of the 20th century. It was apparently inspired by Richard Bentley's Designs for Six Poems by Mr T.Gray of 1753 and Whistler drew the illustrations within elaborate rococo frames, each one different, many reflecting his love of Baroque architecture. He spent months on the detailed pen and ink drawings; according to his brother Laurence he sat up all night drawing one wheatsheaf. The original copper plates were bought by bookseller H.M.Fletcher who issued this suite of the illustrations in 1970.The copper plate is for "In the lowest gallery he beholds some people fishing with long angling rods and others looking on."

Canada.- Restigouche River.- [Kies (William)] Salmon Fishing on the Restigouche, [?one of 20 copies], photographic illustrations, original printed wrappers, housed within modern custom-made morocco-backed drop-back box, [Chicago], [privately printed], 1938 § Fitch (Charles E., editor) Recollections. Abraham Lansing, [and] the Log-Book of Camp Albany, together 2 parts in 1, one of 300 copies, plates, original cloth, privately printed, 1909, [together Wood BSS 105 & 107]; and 4 others, including a rare pamphlet by Jack Russell, 'Angling and Hunting on the Restigouche' and a fine silver gelatine photograph of 'Indian House Lodge Restigouche River' (mounted and within box), both [1920s], v.s. (8) *** A varied group of items relating to salmon fishing on the Restigouche River in New Brunswick (Quebec, Canada). Some are well-known within the canon of Canadian angling literature (Lansing) while others are rarities, such as the Russel pamphlet. Wood describes the Kies work (first item) as, 'one of the legendary salmon rarities', widely believed to have been only 6 in limitation.
Robinson (Alan James, artist) Atlantic Salmon. Salmo Salar, one of 107 copies, etched and wood-engraved plates and decorations with hand-colouring, including 8 etchings extensively worked up with watercolour by the artist on thick ivory wove paper and signed by him in pencil, each of these with protection leaf of cork, original green morocco-backed and edged hand-made paper covered boards, upper cover with mounted morocco panel, incised and painted with watercolour, with an additional set of plates loose within wrap-around portfolio, together all housed within original presentation morocco-backed drop-back box, [Wood BSS 210], folio, Easthampton (MA), Cheloniidae Press, 1988.*** A stunningly produced work, from a centre of creative book arts, the beauty of which seems befitting for the status of Atlantic Salmon in the angling world (Wood). Two text essays are by Stephen Bodio and Ted Williams, exploring the natural history and biology of the Atlantic Salmon, and the battle for its survival.
British Isles.- D[avenport] (J[ames]) Fishing in Scotland, 1942, black and white photographic illustrations, original printed wrappers, signed presentation inscription from the author 'with JD's compliments' to head, staples rusting through, slightly sunned and either finger or dust soiled, housed within modern custom-made morocco-backed drop-back box, [Wood BSS 41], 8vo, for private circulation only, [c.1942]. *** A rare booklet entirely devoted to salmon fishing on the 'Black Stream', the River Ness near Inverness. Davenport seemingly produced similar booklets from 1938-45, referenced in Coleby's Regional Angling Literature (1979) and the National Library of Scotland holding a collected edition.
