Half plate hand tinted ambrotypes and hand tinted half plate opalotype Including ambrotype by Hays of Edinburgh 3 half plate hand tinted cased ambrotypes, approximately 14 x 11cm, one by Hays of Edinburgh of a woman at a desk, one with two women and a young boy in Highland dress, the third of a couple with their four children, half plate opalotype of a woman, hand-tinted and in a display case. Highland Dress ambrotype with fine hand tinting, case lid detached, some of the background colour in Hays ambrotype removed as well as further degradation to background, family group lacks a gilt surround and is slightly light, cases have scuffs and edge wear. The opalotype in good condition, case has wear to surface and velvet interior (4) Formerly owned by the Late Murray Mackinnon, a renowned collector of photography documenting Scottish life from the mid-19th to early-20th century.

A 1/6th plate ambrotype featuring a fine portrait of a lady, wearing a brooch (identified from the accompanying ambrotype as Emily Medcalf). Together with a 1/4 plate ambrotype taken outdoors in June 1859, of Emily Medcalf in a striped dress, standing behind an elderly gentleman. The plate is dark with graining to many areas of the emulsion, mounted in a blind embossed full leather case (.6 x 12.2 cms). Under the plate is a printed paper insert with a handwritten inscription Emily Medcalf, M.A Drew [?] March 1859. This lot continues with a photographic portrait of a gentleman, mounted in a fine full leather case 8 x 9.3 cms; another ambrotype of Fanny Blake 4 x 5 cms in a fine full leather case; Emma Eliza Walker (2nd wife of Edmund Walker (née Eyres) 5.5 x 6.5 cms in full leather case; Ann Johnson (née Flower) sister of Hannah Clements and wife of George Johnson approx 6 x 7 cms mounted in a leather case; Mary Franck approx 6 x 5 cms mounted in a leather case and four others un-named. -
A 19th century daguerreotype of COLERIDGE Lady Mary [née BUCHANAN]. 1/4 plate ambrotype in a plain scuffed full leather case. The plate is in good condition, with some browning around her collar. A handwritten identification label has been inserted under the plate. Mary Buchanan was the second daughter of the Revd Gilbert Buchanan, rector of Woodmansterne, Surrey. In 1818 she married Sir John Taylor Coleridge (nephew of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge), who pursued a successful career as a judge, and was a prolific writer. -
Peter MacNab (1830-1900) in a full embossed leather case (split to hinge); Jane MacNab née Dougall (1851-1937) wife of artist Peter portrait taken in 1880 in a full embossed leather case (split to hinge); a 19th century daguerreotype sitter unnamed in a full embossed leather case; together with an ambrotype of C. Chinn (1780-1858) taken in April 1857 died a year later in Coventry aged 79 together with a small daguerreotype of two children understood to be Francis Selby and Larry Selby in 1867, framed. -
Two 19th century named sitter daguerreotype, entitled Lucas aged 16 and 19 years of age, he died of fever aged 23 years old, approx 7 x 9 cms, both framed and glazed. A miniature ambrotype set in gold of John William Browne Bell, solicitor (1807-1877) approx 4 x 4.5 cms framed and glazed; another ambrotype of James Bray of Moor Park approx 12 x 15 cms and Elisabeth Bray of Moor Park Harrogate. Note: The Moor Park estate at Beckwithshaw in Yorkshire was purchased in 1848 by James Bray, who built a mansion, before deciding to rebuilt it Elizabethan-style in 1859 for the sum of £8,000. James Bray was an iron and brass founder who obtained the contracts to build the Leeds and Thirsk and Wharfedale Railways. -
