MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. A.L.S., Montgomery of Alamein, two pages, 4to, Isington Mill, Alton, Hampshire, 27th April 1968, to [Major Michael Babington Charles] Hawkins. Montgomery states that he has received his correspondent´s letter regarding BLESMA (the Military Charity for Limbless Veterans) and their dinner in October, remarking ´I must tell you that for some years I have been adjusting myself mentally and physically to my age; one of my decisions was to give up going out at night and in 1968 this has become a definite rule; I have become an expert in saying "No", very nicely and explaining the reason. The result; I keep very well´, although continuing ´But I find it very difficult to refuse your request because many of your members in this area possibly were my comrades on the battlefields of Africa and Europe. However, I am faced with a dilemma. I leave London on Friday October 11 for Australia and New Zealand to attend Alamein Reunions in Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington and Auckland, and to meet once more the soldiers of the 9th Australian and 2nd N. Z. divisions who fought so well at Alamein.....If you should have your dinner in September, say 27 or 28th, I would make an exception to my rule and attend it´. Montgomery further writes in a light-hearted manner, ´On my return from Australia and New Zealand I will be worn out, since I know well what will happen once I arrive in those countries! I reckon it may well take 2 years off my life; but since I propose to remain on this planet until I am 100, I don´t mind moving on at 98 - and anyhow I reckon one becomes a bit of a nuisance once over 90! I shall need November to recover, But would attend your dinner if held in early December´. Montgomery concludes ´So now you see my dilemma, and the problem. Perhaps you will let me know your decision?´. An ink annotation at the foot of the second page, presumably in the hand of Hawkins, indicates that a reply was sent to Montgomery on 30th April with the suggestion of either 6th/7th or 13/14th December as suitable dates for the dinner. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG

In 1859 the Alton Towers estate was inherited by the 18th Earl of Shrewsbury, who two years earlier had succeeded to the earldom. In celebration of his inheritance, the earl held a procession through Staffordshire in April 1860. Beginning in Uttoxeter, it stretched over a mile with up to 40,000 people in the grounds of Alton Towers at the end. It was presumably this event, which led The Illustrated London News to commission Rawlins to illustrate the Gothic Revival house for them in April 1860.Pugin is principally remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style of architecture, and his work culminated in designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster in Westminster, London, and its renowned clock tower, the Elizabeth Tower (formerly St. Stephen's Tower), which houses the bell known as Big Ben.
