An Aller Vale (Torquay) pottery 'Tommy Atkins' Boer War commemorative loving cup: of cylinder form with sprigged soldier by a palm tree and grasses, incised South Africa 1899-1900 and verso 'God Bless you Tommy Atkins, Here's your country's love to you', unmarked, 14.5 cm high. *Notes The 1st battalion Devonshire Regiment was recalled from India in 1899 and the 2nd battalion mobilised from Aldershot, both arriving in South Africa later that year. The 1st battalion suffered 95 deaths and 85 wounded at the Battle of Ladysmith where Lt J. Masterson was awarded the V.C. Both batallions returned the following year.
