Wonderful William De Morgan tiles from Catleugh collection up for sale

It is fair to say that Jon Catleugh had a wide range of interests. He has been described as an architect, designer, painter, collector and ceramic historian.

The Arts & Crafts and Design sale at Woolley & Wallis in Salisbury on August 24-25 includes a number of William De Morgan tiles from his collection, offered alongside a variety of objects.

Estimated at £1000-2000 is this rare large tile, 10in (25cm) square, painted with a portrait of a Renaissance lady (pictured above), in shades of blue, aubergine, green and yellow.

A large pair of William De Morgan Sands End Pottery Persian Parrot tiles – estimate £2000-3000 at the Woolley & Wallis auction on August 24-25.

A large pair of William De Morgan Sands End Pottery Persian Parrot tiles are estimated at £2000-3000.

Measuring 20.5cm square, each is painted with a parrot bird before stylised foliage, in shades of green, yellow, blue and turquoise on a white ground, with impressed marks.

Coming in with a ‘more affordable’ guide price of £100-200 is a large William De Morgan Late Fulham Period tile, covered in a turquoise glaze, impressed factory marks, minor glaze chip to rim, 20.5cm square.
