Which watch wins it at Fellows’ Luxury sale
06 March 2023 Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe: all these names and more are to be found at Fellows’ Luxury Watch Sale.
Estimated at £8000-12000 is this Patek Philippe 18ct rose gold Gondolo wrist watch, which comes with its box and papers.
The sale, held at the Birmingham saleroom on March 16 comprises more than 180 examples of top watch brands. There are major advantages to buying watches at auction. For one thing, they are almost always far more affordable than newer examples. Also, buying a watch at auction is kinder to the environment, saving 0.8 tonnes of CO2 emissions versus buying a new one according to a report commissioned by Auction Technology Group.
With these advantages comes the challenge that older watches may need maintenance. However, a mechanical service and repair only has a footprint of around 12kg of CO2e, far lower than that of buying a new one (according to the same report). Well cared for mechanical watches can last 60 years or more.
This Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner “Hulk” bracelet watch, c.2009, has luminous hour markers and a date aperture to three. It is pitched at £12,000-18,000 making it one of the top estimated lots in the auction.
This Hublot Big Bang chronograph wristwatch with a diamond set bezel and exhibition case back is estimated at £4500-6500.
A diamond set stainless steel Santos 100 wrist watch by Cartier featuring Roman numeral hour markers is pitched at £4000-6000.
Opening the sale is this Audemars Piguet wristwatch in yellow metal. Featuring a white dial with baton hour markers, it has an estimate of £2800-3200.
With a light copper dial featuring Arabic numeral and baton hour markers, this Alexandre Meerson 18ct white gold D15 MK-1 wrist watch has an estimate of £3300-4300.
Always make sure to check the condition report on a watch before placing a bid, and if at all possible, visit the auction house to view the watch yourself.
