Which watch wins it at Fellows’ Luxury sale
06 March 2023 Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe: all these names and more are to be found at Fellows’ Luxury Watch Sale. The sale, held at the Birmingham saleroom on March 16 comprises more than 180 examples of top watch brands. There are major advantages to buying watches at auction. For one thing, they are almost always far more affordable than newer examples. Also, buying a watch at auction is kinder to the environment, saving 0.8 tonnes of CO2 emissions versus buying a new one according to a report commissioned by Auction Technology Group.
With these advantages comes the challenge that older watches may need maintenance. However, a mechanical service and repair only has a footprint of around 12kg of CO2e, far lower than that of buying a new one (according to the same report). Well cared for mechanical watches can last 60 years or more.
Always make sure to check the condition report on a watch before placing a bid, and if at all possible, visit the auction house to view the watch yourself.
