Warm up this winter with whisky at auction
08 December 2021 Whether it is whisky or whiskey, buying a bottle of this golden-brown spirit is perfect to celebrate the Christmas season or for purchasing as a gift.Whisky (or whiskey when it’s Irish) is the name used to describe spirits made from grain that is mashed, fermented, distilled and aged.
Here is a selection of whisky and whisky-related items coming up at auction this month.
Cask and bottle
Among the items at Tennants’ Fine Wine and Whisky Sale on December 17 is a range of bottles to suit all tastes and budgets.
One of its highlights is a Hogshead cask of 1995 Tobermory single malt whisky with an estimate of £15,000-20,000. Held in bond at Deanston Distillery near Stirling, the barrel contains 137 litres of whisky (195 bottles).
Other highlights include a bottle of ‘The Edwardian’, a private bottling of Macallan 31-year-old Highland single malt scotch whisky, which is estimated £1000-1500.

Famous Grouse
For the lower end of the budget is this bottle of The Famous Grouse Vintage Malt Whisky (distilled 1992, bottled 2004) with no reserve at Gilbert Baitson’s timed sale on December 12.
Miniature bottles
Five miniature bottles of whisky in a presentation gift set are offered with an estimate of £180-220 at Gildings timed auction ending on December 12.
Vintage Glen Grant
This 1950s Glen Grant 10 year old Highland Malt whisky 80° proof is a rare bottling by Camerons Brewery Hartlepool. It is estimated at £400-500 at Elstob & Elstob on December 11.
Edwardian tantulus
For the whisky connoisseur how about a tantulus to keep your fine spirits on display? This Edwardian tantulus has labels for Whiskey, Gin and Brandy. The silver-coloured labels in the Daniel and Arter oak set are made of EPNS (electroplated nickel silver). It is offered with an estimate of £100-150 at Hansons Banbury on December 15.
