Tiletastic: How to buy into the Arts and Crafts style with statement tiles at auction
05 April 2023 Tiles are a great way to bring a taste of Arts & Crafts style into your home.They can be framed and hung on a wall, used as part of larger motifs in fireplaces and a variety of other decorative uses.
Here is a selection coming up in Lyon & Turnbull’s Design since 1860 sale on April 19.
Pugin tiles
Aesthetic Movement tiles
Four Aesthetic movement tiles, one by William Stephen Coleman (1829-1904) and three attributed to Pierre Mallet.
The Coleman tile for Minton & Co is c.1870 while the three others are marked for Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co, attributed to French designer Pierre Mallet (1836-98). The group is estimated at £300-500.
William De Morgan tile
This c.1890 carnation tile designed by artist William De Morgan (1839-1917) has an impressed Sands End mark on the base. It is estimated £300-500.
Voysey tile
Architect and furniture and textile designer CFA Voysey (1857-1941) designed this time for Pilkington's Tile and Pottery Co c.1920. This Voysey tile design is recorded in research books including 20th Century British Tiles by C Blanchett and a similar design features in Voysey Arts and Crafts Designer by K Livingstone. The tile is estimated at £1000-1500.
