Styles galore at Chiswick Auctions’ picture sale
11 March 2020 The British and European fine art sale at Chiswick Auctions on March 17 includes a wide variety of works spread across different categories. With pictures ranging from Orientalist works to Contemporary prints, here we pick out five highlights demonstrating the different types of lot on offer.1. Still life of poppies
The Chiswick Auctions sale includes two Impressionist-style canvases by Belgian painter Fernand Toussaint (1873-1955) with contrasting subjects. One of them depicts a woman walking in the garden while the other, shown here, is a still life of poppies in a blue and white vase.
The 2ft 8in x 3ft 4in (81cm x 1m) oil on canvas was acquired by the vendor in c.1985 and appears here with a £12,000-18,000 estimate.

2. Gouache portrait
Among the portraits at the Chiswick sale is a gouache of Mademoiselle Villars by George Chinnery (1774-1852). The artist apparently was introduced to the sitter after the painter Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun introduced Mlle Villars to Chinnery's wife who was seeking a teacher for their children.
She then lived with the Chinnerys for two years during which time she reputedly became the cause of some disagreements between the husband and wife.
The 2ft 4in x 21.25in (70 x 54cm) gouache is estimated at £500-700.

3. Sublime scene
A watercolour by John Martin (1789 - 1854) is among the Romantic landscapes on offer at the Chiswick Auctions sale.
Ariadne with a lyre looking out to sea is signed & dated 1843, and the wide format and subject matter makes a contrast to the artist’s famous ‘fire and brimstone’ pictures, the like of which can now be found in museums like Tate Britain.
This example is offered with a £5000-7000 estimate.
