Spruce up your shelves with stylish bookends
11 August 2021 There are many ways to show off your book collection and one way to do it is bookends. At auction there are a variety of styles available and here is a selection of five coming up for sale this month.1. Arts and Crafts bookends
This pair of Arts and Crafts bookends made of copper and brass-mounted stained beech, above, are triangular form and decorated with repoussé floral panels and brass studs.
The 6.5in (17cm) high bookends are estimated at £80-120 at Elstob & Elstob on August 21.
2. Book slide and bookends
This lot at Glasgow auction house McTear’s includes a late 19th century walnut and marquetry book slide and a pair of marquetry bookends. The bookends came from the collection of Scottish dance specialist, the late William Mowat-Thomson (1933-2019).
The items will be offered with an estimate of £30-50 at McTear’s on August 17-18.
3. Parliament stone bookends
This lot comprises two pairs of Parliament stone bookends as well as a letter holder. The items were constructed from stone recovered from the damage to the Houses of Parliament during air raids on London and fabricated by HM Ministry of Works and Building for charitable purposes.
The group is offered with an £80-120 estimate at Bearnes Hampton Littlewood on August 24.
4. Duck bookends
This pair of Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian Pottery bookends in the shape of ducks are in a matt grey glaze with yellow highlights and have factory marks underneath. The auction house notes the style is recorded in A J Cross’ book Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian Pottery and Tiles (published by Richard Dennis).
The 5.5in (14cm) wide pair will be offered with a £150-250 estimate on August 24-25 at Woolley & Wallis.
5. Monkey bookends
Continuing on the animal theme, here we have a pair of monkey bookends. The 7in (18cm) high pair are offered at an auction in Ireland at Sheppard’s on August 17-18 with an estimate of €300-500.
