Spice up your kitchen with a novelty pepper pot
09 September 2020 Call it a pepper shaker, a pepper pot or a pepperette, this selection of novelty examples will persuade you to pick up a piece for your home.A variety of novelty pepper pots are available at online auctions every week. Here is a selection coming up for sale online this month.
1. Budgie pepper pot
Victorian novelty glass and silver pepper pots by Alexander Crichton appear at auction relatively frequently. The Scottish silversmith designed claret jugs, pepperette and scent bottles. More 34 different animals were created by Crichton’s workshop between 1881-82.
This example (above) is a 5.7in (14.5cm) long clear glass budgerigar, marked for Alexander Crichton, London 1882. It is estimated at £1000-1500 on September 9-11 at Bamfords.

2. Mr Punch pepperette
This silver novelty Mr Punch pepperette with marks for William Henry Sparrow of Birmingham, 1903, forms part of an online held by William George in London.
The auction house expects bidding to reach between £980-1180 when the sale closes on September 15.

3. Owl pepper pots
This pair of 20th century Norwegian silver-gilt and purple and green enamel pepperettes, by David Andersen are 2.2in ( 5.5cm) high. Each is marked under the base with maker's mark and stamped 'Norway Sterling 925S'. They are offered at Tennants on September 19 with an estimate of £80-120.

4. Stuart Devlin pepper and salt shakers
Items by silversmith Stuart Devlin, who died in 2018 aged 86, are highly collectable. This Stuart Devlin silver pepperette and salt shaker are hallmarked London, 1976, and estimated at £400-500 on September 22 at Kings Russell Auctoneers.
