A recent sale at Forum Auctions included a group of etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669).

‘Self-Portrait in a Flat Cap and Embroidered Dress’, an etching by Rembrandt van Rijn – £13,000 at Forum Auctions. It sold to a buyer on thesaleroom.com.

They were entered for sale by a Gloucestershire lady and included this example titled Self-Portrait in a Flat Cap and Embroidered Dress.

The 3.75 x 3in (9.5 x 7cm) print was a ‘good and even’ impression of the first or possibly second state of three known versions c.1642.

An earlier owner was Hermann Weber (1817-54) whose massive collection of Old Master prints was dispersed in Leipzig across two auctions in 1855-56.

Estimated to bring £3000-5000 at Forum’s auction in London on November 21, it sold to a bidder via the thesaleroom.com at £13,000.

The group also contained a lifetime impression of the artist’s mother, which tipped over top estimate to sell for £10,000, and an etching of a sleeping puppy. Described as ‘very scarce and delicate’, it more than doubled hopes to sell for £12,000.
