Sold on thesaleroom.com: Hans Coper 'Cycladic' vessel
20 December 2019 Artist-potter Hans Coper (1920-81) has become one of the most sought-after names in the studio pottery market.
A Hans Coper stoneware 'Cycladic' vessel that sold for £23,000 at Mallams. It was knocked down to a bidder on thesalroom.com.
His series of ‘Cycladic’ stoneware, which he made in a variety of shapes derived from ancient Greek forms, represented a series Coper’s last and most critically acclaimed body of work.
Most were made in Frome in the mid-1970s at a time when debilitating disease began to limit his output.
An interesting example was offered at Oxford auction house Mallams on December 5.
The Cycladic vessel came from the Peter Dingley collection. Dingley (1923-2018), whose gallery in Stratford-upon-Avon ran from 1966-91, is a name synonymous with British studio pottery.
Although Dingley did not consider himself a ‘collector’, he acquired many good pieces that were sold to benefit two charities for living potters and artists.
Estimated at £10,000-15,000, the 6in (15cm) Hans Coper (1920-81) stoneware 'Cycladic' vessel sold for £23,000 and was bought by a bidder using thesaleroom.com.
