Sir Peter Lely and studio picture among thesaleroom.com's most popular lots

Among the most watched items for sale coming up on thesaleroom.com are four items from the collection of Roderick and Valentine Butler at auction house Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood.

Attributed to Sir Peter Lely and studio, this 4ft 1in x 3ft 4in (1.25 x 1m) portrait of Catherine Sondes, Countess of Rockingham, will be offered at £7000-10,000.

On March 10 Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood in Exeter will sell the personal collection of furniture and works of art formed by Roderick and Valentine Butler at their home, Marwood House in Honiton.

Roderick joined his father Noel in the family antiques business in 1957 and met Valentine when she came to work for the Butlers as a restorer in 1969.

The Butlers are not moving home (and the business will continue from the showrooms adjacent to the house) but they are selling some 481 lots.

1. Sir Peter Lely and studio picture

Attributed to Sir Peter Lely (1618-80) and studio, this 4ft 1in x 3ft 4in (1.25m x 1m) portrait of Catherine Sondes, Countess of Rockingham (above), has provenance to Sir Upton Grevile Smythe Bt 1885 of Ashton Court. The catalogue notes there are versions of this portrait, by Lely, at Rockingham Castle and Wilton House. It is estimated at £7000-10,000.

2. John Drew longcase clock

This late 17th century longcase clock by John Drew is estimated at £2800-3200.

This late 17th century eight-day duration, five-pillar movement longcase clock by John Drew is estimated at £2800-3200. The black lacquer and chinoiserie clock is decorated with Oriental figures within a garden landscape. It is inscribed to the base of the dial below the chapter ring at VI o'clock John Drew Londini Fecit.

3. Stumpwork mirror

A rare dated Charles II stumpwork mirror is estimated at £20,000-30,000. Measuring 2ft 3in x 23in (69 x 59cm), and placed in an early 20th century tortoiseshell frame, it is dated 1671.

4. Micro-mosaic

A late 18th century Italian Grand Tour circular micro-mosaic of a goldfinch: attributed to Roman artist Giacomo Raffaelli, c.1775-1800. The mosaic is fitted in a 2.25in (6cm) diameter gilt-copper slip and square fruitwood frame. It is estimated at £1000-1500.
