David Griffiths MBE (b.1939) is regarded one of the leading portrait painters of his generation in Wales.

He was born in Liverpool but brought up in North Wales and, after studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, he later settled in Cardiff where he established himself as a fine portraitist who was highly credited for being able to capture the likeness of his sitters. Among his portraits are those he made of Rowan Williams, Lord Callaghan and Sir Geraint Evans.

This 3ft 4in x 2ft 4in (1.02m x 76cm) signed oil on canvas of Prince Charles has emerged for sale at Grand Auctions on October 5. It shows the sitter in the Orchard Room at Highgrove and is estimated at £1000-2000.

Kyffin Williams portrait

A portrait of Sir Kyffin Williams by David Griffiths – estimated at £800-1200 at Grand Auctions.

Another lot by the artist on offer at the same sale is a portrait of the important Modern Welsh artist Sir Kyffin Williams (1918-2006) – an artist who himself appears regularly at auction.

The 2ft 1in x 2ft 5in (64 x 51cm) signed oil on board is estimated at £800-1200.

South African artist’s boat

Edward Wolfe watercolour

‘South African Beached Boats’, a watercolour, pen and ink by Edward Wolfe – estimated at £800-1200.

The Grand Auctions sale will also offer a collection of 37 works by the South African painter Edward Wolfe (1896-1981) at the October 5 sale.

The artist was born in Johannesburg but moved to England to develop his art career. He studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic and the Slade School of Art from 1916-1918.

He was an artist on the fringes of the Bloomsbury Group, being invited to join Roger Fry’s Omega Workshops, where he first exhibited in 1918. He later exhibited in different countries as well as at the Royal Academy between 1951 to 1970.

The works on offer include figurative studies, nudes and landscapes but also this signed watercolour titled South African Beached Boats which measures 12.5 x 16.5 in (32 x 42cm) and has a label on the back for Kosman Fine Art. It is estimated at £800-1200.

Tirzah Garwood print

‘The Crocodile’, a woodblock print by Tirzah Garwood – estimated at £60-80 at WH Peacock.

The artist Eileen Lucy ‘Tirzah’ Garwood (1908-51), the wife of fellow artist Eric Ravilious, has been gaining increasing recognition in her own right over the last few years.

Her prints have been performing well recently and one will be offered at WH Peacock on October 2, although it is a small example printed posthumously in 1989. The 6.5 x 5in (16.5 x 12.5cm) woodblock print is titled The Crocodile and is numbered 276/500. It is estimated at £60-80.

Portrait of artist’s daughter-in-law

Frederick Charles Mulock portrait

‘After The Sermon’ by Frederick Charles Mulock – estimated at £200-300 at Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood.

Frederick Charles Mulock (1886-1931) was a landscape and figurative artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy and at the Walker Gallery in London.

Despite his artistic bent, he was also notable solider, serving as a lieutenant during the First World War and where his knowledge of French and Italian made him a useful interpreter during the Gallipoli campaign.

After the war he returned to painting, producing works from both his homes in north Devon and Kensington

Offered at Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood on October 13-14 is this portrait of his daughter-in-law Winifred Mulock with her pet dog. The 23.5 x 19.75in (60 x 50cm) oil on canvas is signed with the artist’s monogram and was exhibited by the artist at the Royal Society of Painters in WaterColours in 1933.

Its title is After The Sermon and it is estimated at £200-300.
