Prep for the festive season sustainably: Buy second hand for Black Friday

Tis the season to shop. But don’t get dazzled by Black Friday deals. This is the time of year to think carefully about buying ‘pre-loved’ items for loved ones (and yourself).
This early Steiff teddy bear, c.1910, in golden mohair and features a swivel head and jointed limbs. Estimated at £500-800, it is offered at Special Auction Services on December 8.
Of course, this week also marks the rapid approach of the festive season. Here’s a chance to scoop up some top lots to improve your home as Christmas approaches.
German auction house Antiquariat Peter Kiefer has this bar in the shape of four books which goes under the hammer in auction 126 (December 15 and 17). It has an estimate of £450. It is likely French and features glassware which is probably later.
This pair of tulip candlesticks of stylised and minimalist design date to 1974. They were made by Robert Welch and measure 13in (32.5cm). Offered at Gerrards Auction Rooms’ sale of November 24-25, they have an estimate of £260-280.
This fine 19th century mahogany dining table is offered at Gardiner Houlgate on November 24 with an estimate of £600-1000. It comes complete with six dining chairs including one carver, each with stuffover seats.
