Prep for staycation with these summer decorating ideas
22 May 2020 Summer holiday plans not quite what you’d hoped? Is that trip to a sunny island somewhere remote looking more unlikely by the day?Instead of resigning yourself to a summer at home, get excited about it and spruce up your living space by adding some light and colourful touches.
Pick a vase for fresh summer flowers
This pair of funky Art Nouveau green glass ‘glug’ vases are 30cm tall each, ideal on their own or with a couple of vivid blooms. The pair goes under the hammer at SAS on June 2 with an estimate of £70-100.
Or if you’re in the market for something a little more traditional there is a selection of Moorcroft vases coming up at The Cotswold Auction Company on June 9-10, including this example by Emma Bossons with red and white flowers, which is estimated at £80-120.
Spruce up your garden
Container gardening can work in gardens of any size. Looking to fill a large space? There’s a single lot of 61 zinc flowerpots and planters on offer at Mander Auctioneers on June 6, providing a modern-rustic look. That’s a lot of planting space with an estimate of £80-120.
But there’s also an array of garden ornaments and salvage including flowerpots of all shapes and sizes coming up at RJ Keighery City Auction Rooms’ Pub and Garden sale on June 20. This pair of Grecian style concrete urns is among them, offered for €120-220.
Go for some gleaming glassware
Place these individually round the house or in small statement groups. This glassware will look lovely in sunny summer rooms. The set includes three Mary Gregory 19th and 20th century glass jugs with an assortment of other Mary Gregory-style pieces including a tankard and a beaker with enamelled decoration of Queen Victoria. It has an estimate of £120-220 at SAS on June 2.
Dine al fresco
Pick out some garden furniture to suit your style – there are several sets coming up at Stroud Auctions from July 8-9. The example shown here has an estimate of £30-50 and includes a table, bench and two chairs.
Put a colourful twist on the experience with some colourful tableware too. How about this set of 20th century Carlton Ware buttercup design set (which of course includes a butter dish). It’s on offer at SAS on June 2 for £100-150.
Go nautical
When choosing a statement piece for the table, why not go for something a little offbeat? This 1991 glazed stoneware lobster bowl by Roger Cockram for Chittlehampton Pottery is available for £100-200 at Burstow & Hewett’s sale of June 3-5.
