Picassomania – a chance to buy a Picasso original online at auction
19 March 2021 Auction house Bonhams is holding a 'Picassomania' sale which includes artworks by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) including ceramics, prints and photographs.The March 23 sale in London features 100 lots “showcasing the full diversity of his oeuvre”.
Lucia Tro Santafe, head of sale at Bonhams, said: “Picasso is rightly one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century, and Picassomania showcases the full diversity of his oeuvre – and his versatility as an artist. It includes all mediums, from ceramics and prints, through to unique works on paper and photographs.”
Here is a selection from the upcoming auction.
1. Tête d'Homme print
Some of Picasso’s prints are a good way to buy his work at an entry-level price. This linocut print numbered 303/400 in pencil called Tête d'Homme Barbu from 1966 was published by Galerie Madoura as a greeting card in 1967.
It is estimated at £600-800.
2. Taureau dish
This dish called Taureau conceived in 1952 and executed in an edition of 500 at Sotheby's New York in 1998. It has an estimate of £1000-2000.
3. Picasso photo
This photograph of Picasso by André Villers (1930-2016) called Les Yeux de Pablo Picasso, 1956 has a photographer's studio stamp on the back and is estimated at £1000-1500.
4. Gold plate
The top lot of the sale is Visage de Faune, a 22-carat gold repoussé plate, which has an estimate of £250,000-350,000. Conceived in 1955, it was made in 1968 by François and Pierre Hugo – it is the first made by François Hugo in collaboration with Picasso.
