Memorabilia marking the north west passage to punk, new wave and indie success in the 1980s

The period of ‘Madchester’ in particular symbolised the period celebrated in Omega Auctions’ sale on August 10 titled Punk, Indie and New Wave, offering a range of memorabilia alongside vinyl.

Here are five ideas on what to buy.

Joy Division t-shirts

Any memorabilia connected to Joy Division is highly collectable. Hailing from Salford, they were formed in 1976 and first named Warsaw. The band comprised singer Ian Curtis, guitarist and keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bass player Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris.

Sumner, Hook and Morris went on find success with New Order after Curtis’ suicide.

Estimated at £80-120 are these two early Joy Division t-shirt designs including Unknown Pleasures (pictured above), probably c.1979 or early 1980s (catalogued “in size M, though has shrunk with age”), and a Love Will Tear Us Apart design, probably c.1980s/90s on ‘London’ label, size L.

Stone me

Stone Roses 1989 Japanese tour poster – estimate £200-250 at Omega on August 10.

The Stone Roses were a huge part of the Madchester scene in the late 1980s/early 90s, having been formed in 1983. The classic line-up was vocalist Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Mani and drummer Reni.

This original poster advertising dates on the Stone Roses 1989 Japanese tour measures approx 51 x 76cm and is estimated at £200-250.

Monkey magic

Ian Brown Unfinished Monkey Business figurine – estimate £200-300 at Omega on August 10.

After the Stone Roses split in 1996 singer Ian Brown launched a solo career. His debut album Unfinished Monkey Business released in February 1998 also featured former Stone Roses musicians.

The pewter monkey figurine on base shown here, approx 13cm tall, was produced in limited numbers to celebrate the album and distributed to those associated with the album and label execs etc.

Catalogued as being in ‘excellent condition’, it is estimated at £200-300.

Bolton Buzzcocks

Buzzcocks 1980 concert poster – estimate £200-300 at Omega on August 10.

It wasn’t just Manchester: flying the flag for Bolton were the Buzzcocks, who started in 1976. This concert poster for a gig at King's Hall, Blackburn, on November 5, 1980, is signed by band members Pete Shelley, Steve Diggle, John Maher, Steve Garvey.

Measuring about 51 x 76cm and with tape repairs, age wear etc, it is estimated at £200-300.

Smiths and signature

The Smiths gig contract 1984 signed by Morrissey – estimate £1000-1500 at Omega on August 10.

Ignoring more recent controversies for now, one of the most influential bands to come out of Manchester were The Smiths, formed in 1982. The classic line-up was Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce.

At the Omega auction this original performance contract for a Smiths concert in April 1984 is signed to the lower portion by Morrissey. Measuring 21 x 29.6cm, it is estimated at £1000-1500.
