Marvel at 100 years of Surrealist art at Bonhams
21 March 2024
As Surrealism reaches its 100th anniversary this year, Bonhams celebrates with a dedicated auction in Paris.
Probably the best-known name in the history of Surrealism is Salvador Dalí (1904-89), who designed this Cabinet Anthropomorphique, estimated at €6000-8000. Conceived in plaster in 1973 it was cast in silver in an edition of 330 by the Mibrosa Foundry in Barcelona.
Here we look at five pictures going under the hammer in the sale.
Made by Belgian artist Remy van den Abeele, this oil on canvas Perpétuité is reminiscent of another Belgian artist Magritte. Painted in 2002, it is estimated at €1000-2000.
L’aventure by Jean-Claude Silbermann is a piece of wood marquetry created in 1997 and offered for €900-1200.
Belgian artist Jane Gaverol (1905-84) painted Le Bon Bout de la Raison (the good end of reason) in 1962 and it is offered with an estimate of €50,000-70,000.
This classic picture box by American artist Joseph Cornell (1903-72) is untitled. Made in 1933 it features a cardboard box, photographic print and metal beads and is estimated at €12,000-18,000.
