Lapping up luxury: Contents from London’s Savoy Hotel to be sold at auction

In total, over 1800 lots have been consigned to hospitality sector saleroom Pro Auction with the first part of the collection being offered in a sale on August 8.

Many of the items have graced the rooms and halls of the Savoy for many years and the group includes furniture, fixtures, fittings, lighting, artwork, panels and mirrors.

The five-star hotel on the Strand can trace its roots back to 1880 when the impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte bought the Savoy Chapel and built the Savoy Theatre specifically for the production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The hotel followed in 1889 and over the years it has hosted many famous guests from Sir Winston Churchill to Marilyn Monroe.

The hotel will remain open during the current renovation period but this auction gives potential buyers the opportunity to own a slice of glamour and luxury from the Savoy forever.

1. Mahogany headboard
