How to bring style to your kitchen with a vintage cheese dome

Cheese dome, stilton dish, cheese keeper, it has many names and the decorative cheese storer has been a staple of the larder for hundreds of years.

Wedgwood cheese dome

This Victorian Wedgwood green jasperware 8in (20cm) high cheese dome (centre) is offered at McTear’s on July 20 alongside two other cheese domes in jasperware which are unmarked. The group has an estimate of £50-100.

Cheese has been a popular food for thousands of years but by the 19th century having a decorative cheese cover to stop your cheese from drying out was a must have item.

The big porcelain factories of the day created a variety of designs, sizes and shapes. Some had a dish with a glass dome cover, some were porcelain domes while others came in a wedge shape design.

Now buyers like to use these decorated ceramic domes for cheese, cake or for decorating a table or shelf, while collectors covet rare designs and makers.

Here is a selection of cheese domes coming up at auction online.
