Historical pictures come to the fore at upcoming auction

An upcoming auction of Old Masters and historical British pictures includes works by famous names like JMW Turner and John Constable.
A large painting of dogs fighting by Flemish painter Paul de Vos (1595-1678) is one of the most impressive lots in the Woolley & Wallis. Measuring 5ft 9in x 8ft 1in (1.74 x 2.45m), it is estimated at £25,000-30,000. View the catalogue entry for this Paul de Vos painting on thesaleroom.com.
The 530-lot auction at Woolley & Wallis on September 5-6 features a wide range of works from the 15th to 19th century and includes paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints.
Here’s a selection of five lots that caught our eye.
1. JMW Turner watercolour
A seascape depicting fishermen and their boats by JMW Turner (1775-1851) is amont the lots at the Woolley & Wallis sale. The 5.25 x 8.25in (13.5 x 21cm) watercolour was part of a series of works by the artist thought to have been executed during a visit to Brighton. It is estimated at £3000-5000. 2. James Ward farmhouse
Among seven lots at the Woolley & Wallis auction from Stradey Castle in Wales is this village scene by James Ward (1769-1859). Showing figures outside cottages and a sow and her litter in the foreground, the oil on panel measures 2ft 6in x 3ft 9in (75cm x 1.14m) and is estimated at £6000-10,000. 3. Flemish village scene
The Woolley & Wallis sale features a good crop of Dutch and Flemish Old Masters. Among them is this village scene with horsemen, figures working a wine press, and a laundress at the river. A 11.25 x 14.25in (28 x 37) oil on panel, it is catalogued as ‘circle of’ Sebastiaen Vrancx (1573-1647). It is estimated at £2000-3000. 4. John Constable drawing
Among the works by well known names at the Woolley & Wallis auction is this small pencil sketch by John Constable (1776-1837). It depicts Colchester Castle ad relates closely to a drawing from the artist’s 1813 sketchbook which is now in the V&A. Measuring just 3.75 x 4.5in (9 x 12cm), it is estimated at £3000-5000.
