From local cheeses to tennis championships, vintage posters star at Antikbar sale

Encompassing a range of themes and subjects, vintage posters can appeal either for their specific subject matter or their decorative quality.

The Great British cheese

Issued by the National Milk Publicity Council, this vintage advertising poster is titled English Country Cheeses and Where They Come From. Illustrations of cheeses are displayed with a link to the part of the UK where they originate. These include Lancashire, Wensleydale, Cheshire and Stilton. Printed in the 1950s, it has an estimate of £90-180.

Somerset by rail

This 1960s poster for British Railways is offered with an estimate of £300-600 at Antikbar’s Original Vintage Posters auction of August 1.

While there are a number of categories on offer at this sale, there is a focus on vintage railway posers so as this example, offered with an estimate of £300-600. Published by British Railways it features a painting by Jack Merriott (1901-68) depicting horse riders in a scenic countryside. Printed by Chromoworks in the 1960, it is catalogued as being in good condition.

Skiing in Salzburg

This vintage skiing poster has an estimate of £120-240 at Antikbar’s Original Vintage Posters auction of August 1.

Winter sports posters are an enduring favourite among collectors. This 1960s example was issued by the Tourist Head Office of Salzburg in Austria, showing a mountain piste by a ski lift at Shtattberg near Saalbach. A four piste network consisting of Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Fieberbrunn and Leogang is contained within the district of Zell am See, totalling 270 km of ski slopes. The poster is offered with an estimate of £120-240.

Anyone for tennis?

This 1983 Davis Cup poster has an estimate of £188-375 at Antikbar’s Original Vintage Posters auction of August 1.

Printed by Malght, Paris, this vintage sport poster was produced for the 1983 Davis Cup. Featuring the striking image of a foreshortened tennis racked and ball by the German artist Konrad Klapheck, it is offered with an estimate of £187.50-375. For the 72nd edition of the tournament, which was held in Melbourne, Australia, 59 national teams entered. Australia beat Sweden to win overall.

Railway children

This vintage railway poster has an estimate of £1500-3000 at Antikbar on August 1.

One of the top estimated lots in the sale is this classic It’s Quicker by Rail poster issued by LNER and LMS and featuring the Western Highlands in Scotland. The painting by Scottish artist Keith Henderson (1883-1982) features two children watching a train. It was printed in 1938 by Haycock Press in London and is offered with an estimate of £1500-3000.
