From a view of the Italian Riviera to an 18th century still life: Five pictures from an upcoming auction

1. Olivier’s Italian Riviera view

Among the pictures at the Dreweatts sale is a collection of 39 lots by Herbert Olivier (1861-1952), uncle of the famous actor Sir Laurence Olivier (1907-1989). The works have come directly from the family and adorned the walls of the artist’s former home in Airlie Gardens, Holland Park, London for over 100 years.

The top estimated lot of the group is The Garlands of Love which is pitched at £70,000-100,000, but shown above is one of the lots further down the price scale.

The Italian Riviera from La Mortola, a 2ft 4in x 3ft 11in (72cm x 1.19m) oil on canvas from 1901, shows the view from Olivier's garden at his house on the Ligurian coast, which he adored. The same trees, obviously a favourite subject, feature in several other Olivier paintings including two others at Dreweatts.

2. 18^th century still life

A striking still-life by 18th century artist Thomas Longford is estimated at £800-1200 at the Dreweatts sale. Depicting a bunch of grapes on a vine, it has a butterfly on the one of the leaves and other insects elsewhere.

The signed oil on canvas measures 16¾ x 13¾in (43 x 36cm) and comes from a source in Staffordshire.

3. Artist’s self portrait

Self portrait with a palette by James Shaw, estimated at £1500-2000 at Dreweatts.

A self-portrait by James Shaw (fl.1769-84) from the same collection as the Thomas Longford still life is also on offer at Dreweatts.

Showing the artist holding a palette, the oil on canvas measures 23 x 16¾in (59 x 43cm) oil on canvas and is estimated at £1500-2000.

4. Flemish family portraits

Among the lots on offer at the Dreweatts sale is a pair of portraits by Flemish artist Nicholas Joseph Delin (1741-1803). They depict the Antwerp widow Madame Guyot (Françoise-Jacqueline Peeters D'Aertselaer) and her eight children – the first of the portraits showing her with four of her children and the second showing the other four.

A prominent family who lived near Brasschaet, the paintings descended through the generations of the sitters’ family at the Château de Mishaegen before they sold at Sotheby’s in 1998. They were since owned by Northamptonshire dealership Windsor House Antiques.

The 3ft 7in 4ft 5in (1.08 x 1.34m) are both signed and dated 1792 and will be offered together with an estimate of £15,000-25,000.

5. Scottish painter’s Loch scene
