Five whisky lots to make it an even merrier Christmas

Auctions offer a wide choice of Scotch whiskies – you’ll find bottles from a variety of distillers and prices to suit any budget.

You can pick up a bargain at auction and uncover bottles that may no longer be sold in shops, making your purchase good value and special.

Here is a selection of five whisky lots coming up for sale at auction. Remember that unless you are picking up your booty in person then you should factor in delivery cost before bidding.

1. The Balvenie

Estimated at £50-70, this Balvenie single malt whisky is offered at Ewbank's on December 19.

The Balvenie 10-year single malt whisky is sweet and spicy with a note of honey that is popular among whisky aficionados. With an alluring estimate of £50-£70 at Ewbank’s fine wine and spirits auction on December 19 this might just be this year’s Christmas bargain.

2. Macallan

This Macallan 10-year-old single malt whisky from the 1990s is offered at Lyon & Turnbull on December 4 with an estimate of £200-300.

This Macallan 10-year-old single malt is from the 1990s. When you can track it down on retail sites you’ll come up against a £500-£600 price tag whereas auction house Lyon & Turnbull has put an attractive £200-£300 estimate on it. Nice-shaped bottle, too.

3. The Dragon

The Dragon whisky is offered at Lyon & Turnbull on December 4 where it has an estimate of £200-300.

This 19 year-old single malt was distilled in 1990 at Orkney's Highland Park. Almost two decades later, it was bottled by S&JD Robertson as part of The Dragon range which has attracted quite a following among whisky lovers.

Estimated at £200-£300 it features in Lyon & Turnbull’s whisky and spirits sale on December 4.

4. Isle of Jura

A bottle of Isle of Jura single cask malt whisky is estimated at £350-400 at Elstob & Elstob’s Timed online fine art and antiques auction which ends of November 29.

This bottle of Isle of Jura single cask malt whisky is part of a limited edition. Bottled at The Bruichladdich Distillery, the 24-year-old whisky was matured in cask with an extra seven months ‘finishing’ in a bourbon cask. It was distilled in 1987 and bottled at cask strength of 53.9% in 2011. The Isle of Jura single cask malt whisky is estimated at £350-400 at Elstob & Elstob’s Timed online fine art and antiques auction which ends of November 29.

5. Whisky miniatures

Fifteen boxed whisky miniatures to be offered at auction on December 3 at Anderson & Garland’s Christmas Wine and Whsiky auction estimated at £40-80.

If you want to try different whiskies without having to invest in a whole bottle then miniatures are you. They allow you to sample a range of tastes at an affordable price to discover what you like the most.

Fifteen boxed whisky miniatures will be offered at auction on December 3 at Anderson & Garland’s Christmas Wine and Whisky auction. The bottles are from the Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky Co and include bottles of Dufftown 1979; Imperial 1976; Bladnoch 1988; Aberfeldy 1978; Aultmore 1980; and Glenlivet 1979.
