Five to buy: speedy suggestions for toy cars from two days of auction action
06 January 2023
Vectis held more than 84 toy and collectable auctions in 2022, totalling more than 60,000 lots.
Looking stylish in a peach body, mid-blue interior and ridged hubs with smooth tyres is this Dinky 111 Triumph TR2 Sports Car with figure driver, silver trim. Vectis says it is “Excellent Plus, lovely bright example in a Good Plus yellow and red carded picture box with correct colour spot - displays well”. The estimate is £80-110. Check thesaleroom.com to view the Dinky 111 Triumph TR2 Sports Car.
From this month it will list its auctions on thesaleroom.com.
The specialist auction house in Stockton-on-Tees is also launching departments for vinyl records, comic books and graphic novels and books.
Although it has sold lots in these categories before on a small scale, it now plans dedicated sales in these areas. The first will be a Vinyl Record auction on March 30.
Back with toys and collectables, however, coming up from January 10-11 are two Vectis Specialist Diecast auctions offering a wide range of lots including no less than seven private owner collections (five on the second day).
Among the well-known toy car brands represented are Dinky, Matchbox and Corgi.
Here are five speedy ideas on what to buy (including the lot shown above).
Go tow to tow
This Corgi GS29 Racing Car Gift Set includes a Ferrari Daytona - blue, yellow, dish wheels with trailer finished in yellow - and a Surtees Racing Car - blue, yellow, race number 1. The unboxed ‘Duckhams’ Set is “generally Excellent Plus”, says Vectis. Estimate £40-50. View the Corgi GS29 Racing Car Gift Set on thesaleroom.com.
Take the pair
Double up with this pair of Matchbox cars estimated at £40-50. The Regular Wheels 52b BRM Racing Car - blue, yellow plastic hubs, figure driver, racing number 5 is described by Vectis as “Excellent Plus in a Good (slightly grubby) type E colour picture box”. The 19d Lotus Racing Car - green, yellow plastic hubs with black tyres, white, black and yellow racing number 3 bonnet label – is “Excellent in a Good type F colour picture box showing orange model illustration”. Jaguar valued at under £100
A Jaguar racing car will be out of reach for many budgets. But not this admittedly rather smaller Dinky 238 Jaguar Type D Racing Car - turquoise, mid-blue interior and ridged hubs with treaded tyres, white figure driver, black front vent. According to Vectis it is “Near Mint (couple of very minor marks) in a Good Plus yellow and red carded picture box”. Estimate £80-90. Licence to thrill
Estimated at £110-130 is this Corgi 261 ‘James Bond’ Aston Martin DB5 taken from the film Goldfinger. Finished in gold, red interior with ‘James Bond and Bandit’ figures, wire wheels, Vectis says “overall condition is generally Excellent Plus (couple of small marks on sides), still a lovely bright example, inner pictorial stand is Good Plus to Excellent, outer blue and yellow carded picture box is Good (small tear to end flap)”. It comes with Model Car Makers to James Bond colour folded leaflet and S679 Extra Bandit Envelope Set which includes folded leaflet and two Bandit figures.
