Five to buy at Ewbank’s Comics sale
28 March 2024 There is a huge market for collectable comics, and at Ewbank’s Comics auction of April 4, you can find a wealth of items to suit your taste whether you are new to collecting or experienced, looking to fill a gap in your assortment of titles or interested in reading something new.
Estimated at £400-600 is this copy of The Amazing Spider-Man No 50 from 1967 which features the first appearance of the Kingpin, a major Marvel villain.
None of these quite reach the top prices ever for a comic book sale – the record remains with Superman #1, published in 1939, which sold for $5.3m in a private sale. At auction it’s the “Rocket Copy” of Action Comics No 1, which introduced Superman for the first time, and went for $3.2m.

Expected to be the top lot of the sale with an estimate of £600-800 is this Marvel Comics issue of Daredevil No 1 from April 1964. The Stan Lee creation features art by Bill Everett, Jack Kirby and Bill Everett and is a key origins issue from the Silver Age of comics.
This signed lithograph by Clive Barker, the artist of Hellraiser, Candyman, Tales of Blood and many others, is an untitled work created for the horror fantasy Weaveworld from 1987 and has an estimate of £40-60.
Launching the sale is Star Wars No 1, a first print from July 1977, which is estimated at £100-150. It is an adaptation of the first Star Wars film, A New Hope, and kicked off a long running series of Marvel Comics.
Something slightly unusual is this collection of 10 prints, the City of Fire portfolio. The images are by Geof Darrow and Jean Giraud known as Moebius and were not produced for a specific story, but instead are conceptual images of densely populate science fiction scenes. This First Dark Horse Edition was produced in 1993. It has an estimate of £500-700.
