Five to buy at Design Sale linked to remarkable polymath Lewis Foreman Day

The Woolley & Walls auction on October 19-20 follows design from the Aesthetic Movement of the mid 19th century to designers of today, covering ceramics and glass, furniture and lighting, works on paper, metal ware and jewellery.

TSR Woolleys Day Clock

Guided at £1000-1500, this large slate mantel clock by Wassell & Halford was designed by Lewis F Day. It is rectangular with circular dial with Arabic numerals, the dial painted with a panel of daisy flower stems in blue and white on a gold ground, the case with incised floral lunette panels, between two rectangular ceramic panels of flowers Night shade and Day's eye, signed Wassell & Halford to the dial, 38cm high.

Visit thesaleroom.com to view the large slate mantel clock by Wassell & Halford designed by Lewis F Day.

Included is a small collection of items from the descendants of Lewis Foreman Day (1845-1910).

Day was a polymath and designed for ceramics, textiles, furniture and metalware while also writing numerous books on pattern and textile design. Included in the sale are a group of his books, a previously unrecorded pair of bellows designed and made for his own use and a silver napkin ring made for his wife by Omar Ramsden.

The auction also includes two vases probably designed by Lewis F Day, one for Maw & Co, the other an unknown factory, both consigned by family descendants.
